Monday was martial arts night for Big Girl and basebally practice for Big Boy. Tuesday, we went to the library and met up with some other homeschool families at the park. Then we did grocery pickup. The big kids had belt testing in martial arts that night. They don't know whether they passed or failed yet. Belt ceremony is Tuesday of this week. Wednesday was probably our best day this week for school. Everyone just got in there and did lessons without complaining about anything. Thursday, we ran to my parents to hang out. They're moving this week. Thursday night was baseball and softball practices. Friday was nice because the kids got to play outside off and on, and we had that windy weather that comes before a storm. It did rain Friday evening and all through the night. The big kids camped out in our tent in the living room Friday night and Saturday night. Husband and I were both surprised they stayed all night. Saturday, Big Girl had softball practice at an indoor facility since the fields were soaked. We also played in the yard when we got home. I'm usually booked pretty far in advance on reviews. I do have several review books that are already prepped for April and beyond, but it slipped up on me and I don't have anything prepared to post for this week. But hey, it never hurts to take a few days off.

Goodreads description--After being magically gifted with incredible luck, a boy discovers this gift just may be a curse when it comes to love, in this YA novel by #1 New York Times -bestselling author Marissa Meyer.

Jude is determined to fly under the radar. He just wants to draw his comics, host regular D&D night with his friends, work at his parents’ vinyl record store, and escape high school as unscathed as possible. That is, until the night he comes across a mysterious twenty-sided dice and finds himself inexplicably gifted with a bout of supernatural good luck.

Suddenly, everything Jude has ever wanted is within reach. His first art submission is accepted to his favorite fanzine. He helps his friend’s song become a finalist in a songwriting competition. And he’s the 100th caller to a local radio contest, winning him a pair of coveted concert tickets, which he uses to ask out the popular girl he’s been crushing on since elementary school. For a few blissful weeks, he feels invincible.

But when he loses the magic dice at a local music festival, his luck takes a turn for the worse. He struggles to reclaim his good fortune while fighting off long-buried feelings for his best friend―who is definitely not the girl he’s supposed to be in love with. Can Jude risk stepping into the spotlight long enough to win the true girl of his dreams? Or is he doomed to be unlucky in love forever?

The description gives too much away about With a Little Luck. But that also means that I don't have to keep all of that out of my review which makes things easier for me. I got the audiobook for With a Little Luck for review. And I have to say that I was stoked. I've reintroduced audiobooks into my life over the last couple of years, and I'm so thankful because I can probably increase the number of books "read" in a year by a third. At first, I was bummed to be denied the egalley of With a Little Luck, but this type of story is one that I enjoyed on audio probably more than I would have liked reading a physical copy of it. Stacy Carolan was the narrator, and he did an outstanding job.

I don't remember ever reading a contemporary book written solely from the male point of view. Usually, if a male voice is included, it is at least written as a dual or multiple narrative. Marissa Meyer's choice of writing only Jude's voice is probably best as it would have given too much away to have written from either Ari or Maya's perspectives.

As the description states, Jude finds a 20-sided dice, and his luck becomes undeniably good. He wins every coin toss. He is the 100th caller in a radio contest and wins tickets to a concert for the favorite artist of the girl he's been crushing on since elementary school. She agrees to go to the concert with him. And beyond that, they seem to have a great time. And even more, she's interested in joining his D&D group. I'm sure I'm missing a few other things that Jude's good luck provides him with, but you get the gist.

Things seem to be going well for Jude. While Jude is getting to spend time with Maya, his long-time crush, it's obvious to the reader that Maya just isn't interested in Jude the way that Jude wants her to be, even with the extra luck. On the other hand, Jude is helping his best friend Ari with a songwriting competition. She earns a spot to go to a live festival, and Jude, Maya, Ari, and Ezra (Jude's complete opposite, kind of friend, but also kind of nemesis) decide to go as a foursome. At the competition, Jude loses his dice. And his luck goes with it.

Of course, things were going too smoothly for Jude. And no story would be complete without conflict to overcome. I sure was beginning to feel sorry for Jude. His bad luck was almost worse than any of the good luck he ever had. In the end, Jude discovers that his crush on Maya was masking deeper feelings that he has for Ari. And I loved the idea that even bad luck can be good if it leads us to good results. Removing luck from the equation, this is how I believe God works in our lives. He works all things out for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28).

With a Little Luck was a fun read/listen. Jude's family is endearing, and I loved his relationships with each of his sisters. I am a sucker for tropes, and a good best friends to lovers trope is such a good one. I couldn't help but root for Jude and Ari...especially Ari. Bless her. With a Little Luck gets 4 Stars.

Goodreads description--A chance meeting between the sheltered daughter and the forward-thinking son of rival Victorian families sparks a forbidden romance in USA Today bestselling author Mimi Matthews's fourth book in her acclaimed Somerset Stories series.

Shy and stammering Meg Burton-Smythe has spent the whole of her life living on the fringes of local society. She's more comfortable with her daydreams than she is with people. But when a dashing, golden-haired hero rides to her rescue one morning, she dares to hope that her dreams might finally come true. There's only one her handsome rescuer is the son of her father's sworn enemy.

Ivo Beresford doesn't believe in clinging to the past. Freshly returned from a lengthy grand tour, he's looking to the future, eager to spearhead the building of a new railway extension in Somersetshire. But an unexpected encounter with Meg Burton-Smythe, the isolated only daughter of his parents' oldest foe, sets the past and the future colliding.

Resolved to put ancient grudges to rest-at least where innocent young ladies are concerned-Ivo encourages lonely Meg to embark on a secret friendship. After all, what harm can a friendship do? It isn't as though there's any danger of the two of them falling in love...

I've been looking forward to Appointment in Bath since reading Return to Satterthwaite Court since Ivo and Meg's story overlaps with Kate & Charles's. Plus, Mimi Matthews is one of my auto-buy authors. Knowing the backstory between Maggie, Nicholas, and Fred, my immediate reaction to a relationship between a Beresford & a Smythe-Burton was that it could never work. So, of course, I needed to find out how Mimi Matthews would make this work.

Meg couldn't be more likable. She starts the book as meek and shy. But I love it when she discovers her backbone. She avoids the extreme of following in her father's footsteps of plain meanness or vindictive behavior. Meg is a strong female lead even when she doesn't seem that way. Her stammer and uncertainty about how others view her causes her to appear weak, but that's surface level. When the rubber meets the road, Meg stands up for herself against those closest to her and those she wants closest to her. She knows when she deserves to be treated better.

Ivo is almost singularly focused on progress. He's a visionary. He sees where improvements could be made all around him. And his two biggest visions are on moving forward and leaving the past between his parents and Meg in the past and planning a railroad expansion into their home village. Ivo's tunnel vision gets him in trouble when he doesn't notice the feelings of others that he's steamrolling right over.

Fred is probably the biggest curiosity. What will his reaction be to Meg having a relationship with a Beresford? Surely, he has to respond in some underhanded way, either regarding the relationship itself or Ivo's business venture. I won't give things away, but I liked how Mimi Matthews handled things in this area.

Favorite quotes:

-"It's because you'll have faced what you feared. Every time we do so, we emerge stronger for the experience. It's a proven fact."

-"The important things are often difficult to say."

-"He m-may not love me, but he doesn't strike me. He doesn't lock me away in the tower." "A low bar."

-"Is love not something you need?"

-"But he m-might say things. He m-might lose his t-temper." "So what if he does. His words can't harm me."

-"I must blame the mistletoe. Potent stuff, that."

-"You're more than your circumstances."

-"Humans have an infinite capacity for change. We've no need to fear it. To change is to survive."

As always, I enjoyed Appointment in Bath and read it in about two days. Mimi Matthews is one of my favorite authors. Her characters are always deep and multi-layered. Meg and Ivo were no different. And I enjoyed getting to see Fred in quite a sorry state. Our actions do have consequences after all.

This was a quick week. Hopefully this is our last one double timing extra-curricular activities. Monday, I kept Baby Boy home from MDO. He was coughing pretty bad. No fever thankfully. I took Big Girl to martial arts and Husband took Little Boy to baseball. Baby Boy woke up at 4 am coughing. After getting up several times, I ended up putting him in the bed with us. We didn't sleep peacefully the rest of the morning, but we did get to sleep a little late. Tuesday, we did our normal grocery pick up. We were a little lazier than normal because I wasn't feeling well either. Big kids had martial arts. Wednesday was a normal day. Thursday was a lot. First I took the big kids to my parent's house. Then I took Little Boy with me to the doctor for his 3 year checkup. All went well there. They did tell us that his blood work showed he was fighting a virus which makes sense considering his symptoms. We went back to my parent's house to hang out until time to come home. Then the big kids had martial arts. Immediately from there, Big Boy had baseball. Big sister had to hang out until her softball practice after. Her practice got cut short due to temperatures. Friday, I had to run an Amazon return to the UPS store. Then we had school as normal. It was raining all day so the kids couldn't get outside to get their energy out which meant for a loud day. Both kids were supposed to have ball practices on Saturday but the rain drenched the fields and practices were cancelled. I don't mind, but it does mean Big Boy has had almost two weeks of practices more than Big Girl. I finished two books this week and I've made a pretty big dent on another one.

Brie hates the Fae and refuses to have anything to do with them, even if that means starving on the street.

Goodreads description--Dreams come true for an untamable rising star and a mariachi idol in a rousing romance about passion, fame, and family by USA Today bestselling author Priscilla Oliveras.

Ambitious San Antonio singer Catalina “Cat” Capuleta gets the chance of a lifetime when she joins superstar heartthrob and fellow mariachi Patricio Galán on his seven-week concert tour. Demanding and arrogant, Patricio challenges Cat on every level, as an artist and as a woman. But headstrong Cat is determined to be his match. No matter how seductive Patricio’s baritone voice, Cat’s eyes are only on the success and making her familia proud.

No woman gets under Patricio’s skin like Cat. Her talent mesmerizes. Her passion is thrilling. And her drive, stemming from an old unhealed family wound, exposes a vulnerability he secretly recognizes in himself.

When the duo hits the road, the sparks don’t just fly—they detonate. Stage by stage, as each reckons with the past—and with each other’s quick-fire personalities—they bring crowds to their feet, and Cat’s long-held dreams come true. Will their road romance go up in flames? Or could making music together kindle the most rapturous love song of their lives?

Goodreads description--Emmett Atwater agrees to leave Earth behind when Babel Communications offers him a fortune. The catch? He has to launch into deep space to get it. One of ten selected recruits, Emmett boards the company's spaceship and sets course for a planet that Babel has kept hidden from the rest of the world.

Before long, Emmett discovers that all of Babel's recruits have at least one thing in common: they're broken. Broken enough that Babel can remold them however it pleases.

Every training session is a ruthless competition where friendships are tested and enemies are made. Each recruit must earn the right to travel down to the planet of Eden-- where they will mine nyxia, substance that has quietly become the most valuable material in the universe.

But Babel's ship is full of secrets. Secrets about the volatile substance they're hoping to mine, about the reclusive humanoids already living on Eden, and about the true intentions for the recruits.

Emmett will face the ultimate choice: win the fortune at any cost, or find a way to fight that won't forever compromise what it means to be human.

“A high-octane thriller . . . Nyxia grabs you from the first line and never lets go.”
—Marie Lu, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Young Elites series

"Impossible to forget. Impossible to put down. This wonderfully diverse epic is an utterly thrilling binge-worthy treat." —Jay Coles, author of Tyler Johnson Was Here

I got Nyxia for review years ago, and it just kept getting put off. My bad. When I saw it available on audiobook with the elibrary, I put it on hold. It finally came around, and I can mark it off my way overdue books.

Babel Communications has recruited a group of 10 kids in need of financial assistance to take to a new planet in order to mine a substance called nyxia. The trouble: only 8 spots are available, and two recruits will not be taken to Eden. The 10 recruits have to compete in a series of tests to see who will win the 8 spots. These tests are similar to all that we seem to enjoy in series like The Hunger Games, <a href=https://sandyfarmer.blogspot.com/2013/11/upon-further-review-divergent.html"">Divergent, Fourth Wing, Red Rising, etc.

Scott Reintgen writes the contestants in a way that you can't help but root for almost all of them. A few are less likeable than the rest, but even their motivations are usually clear and relatable. This gets you attached to characters that you have no idea whether they will be sticking around or not.

Nyxia had no lack of twists. The tests that Babel constantly threw at the kids kept them and the reader on their toes. The recruits don't know who they can trust, and even when they have moments of levity, eventually, they all had to face off against each other. Babel is keeping secrets. And things are never quite what they appear.

Sullivan Jones did a wonderful job narrating Emmett. I felt his attitude, anger, frustration, and fears through his narration.

Nyxia was much better than I expected. I hate that I put off reading it for so long. Emmett's story was gripping, and I wanted to keep listening when I had to stop. Nyxia gets 4 Stars. Have you read (or listened to) Nyxia? What did you think?

Goodreads description--Opposites attract and sparks fly when the vivacious Arabella falls for a baron who lives under the shadow of a scandalous family secret.

Arabella Latham is a free spirit who longs to feel the spark of true love, but few men can match her passion for Shakespeare or her zest for life. Though her prospects seem slim, Arabella knows she can always count on the handsome but stoic Lord Henry Northcott, dubbed “The Brooding Baron” by the ton, to be willing to engage in intelligent conversation and even share a congenial dance with her at almost every ball. His quiet demeanor is the opposite of her vivacious personality, and she finds herself drawn to him, despite their differences.

Lord Northcott has quietly admired Arabella for years, grateful that his friendship with her brother has allowed him to share in her company. But he knows he cannot pursue a romantic relationship with any woman—let alone someone as bright and beautiful as Arabella—because of the shadow that an old family scandal has cast over his life. He has vowed to preserve what is left of his family’s reputation by holding himself above reproach apart from society and focusing the majority of his efforts at Parliament.

But Arabella is determined to show Lord Northcott that life is meant to be enjoyed, and she sets out to see what is behind the walls the Brooding Baron has built around himself. Could the spark of true love be enough to drive away the shadows holding Henry back?

Goodreads description--Every word in his letter spells mortification. There was only one reason young Harrison Chase moved away from his idyllic country upbringing to the long dark hours of working in a London factory—he was bound and determined to make his fortune and deserve a chance to court Christine Stone. But as years passed and his dream of making a fortune came closer into view, he realized there were a lot more important things in life than young, unrequited love. In the middle of his charge to reverse the Corn Laws, and make food affordable to workers struggling to feed their families, his housekeeper helpfully mails a letter she finds languishing amongst his things. Not just any letter—a six-year-old love letter to Christine. With no other choice, he rushes back to his childhood home on Christine’s family estate. If he can’t get his hands on that letter before she does, Christine will discover what a pitiful and pretentious fool he had been. Only, he hadn’t counted on the mail being delayed. Now, Harrison must decide which is worse—waiting with Christine as he not-so-slowly falls back in love with her, or returning to London without the letter, knowing once she reads it, he will never be able to visit her or look her in the eye again.

This book was previously published as part of the Timeless Victorian Romance Collection A Note of Change , under the title "Waiting for the Post."

Harry left home years ago to make money. He wanted to marry his childhood friend and neighbor, Christine. But as the son of a steward, he had nothing to offer her. He needed to make his fortune to be worthy of her hand and have something to offer her. While he was away, he did just that. He did make his fortune, but he also discovered a cause worth fighting for, and whether nobly or stupidly, he sacrificed all for the cause. Every penny he earned, he promised to those in position to repeal the corn laws. The worst part about that is the corn laws will likely cause Christine's family's estate to suffer. So he stuffs his feelings and tries to forget her. A letter he wrote to Christine years ago, but never sent, accidentally gets posted, and he freaks out. He travels straight home in hopes of intercepting it.

Christine is exactly as Harry remembers her, and being close to her brings all his buried but never forgotten memories and emotions back to the surface. Christine was heartbroken with the way Harry left without a word all those years ago. Her friend is home, and she hopes to confide in him that she's planning on taking a position as a governess. Christine is waiting on the very letter from her potential future employer to arrive. And thus, Christine and Harry begin to meet daily and wait on the post to arrive together.

This was such a sweet romance. I didn't want to stop reading, and I did read it really quickly. The passion that Harry wrote to Christine was palpable. And how she could respond in any way besides reciprocation would be impossible. Yet Harry is essentially in the same position as he was all those years ago. He is still penniless because even though he did make quite a lot of money, he plans to give it all away.

Esther Hatch has done it again. Really well written. I loved the characters. Harry was so stinking honorable. And Christine was truly charming. For Letter or Worse gets 4 Stars.

You guys! This was the craziest week. We are double-timing extra curricular activities for a while. Martial arts belt testing is on March 5th so we're just making due until then. Monday, Husband took the kids to martial arts, and then I took Big Girl to softball evaluations. This is the first year we've had enough girls in her age group to have two teams. Tuesday, we went to the library and met a new homeschool friend at the park. There was actually a whole group of homeschool families at the park this day and we hung out with them and played for a while. Then I had to go get groceries. Tuesday night, Husband ran the big kids to martial arts and immediately after that to baseball. Wednesday was a normal day. We did run my car to the oil change company Wednesday night to drop it off to get worked on tomorrow. Thursday, we had a field trip to a local dairy farm. That went well. It was with a new homeschool group that we plan to join for the fall. Thursday night the big kids did martial arts and baseball again. Softball picks up next week. Friday was finally a mostly normal day. We did have to go pick up my car. Saturday morning, I had to take Big Boy to the ball field for batting practice. Then we went for a walk as a family. The kids went to Grammy's house to hang out for a couple of hours, and I worked on consignment and mopping my house. I finished an ARC this week, and I'm having a little bit of a book hangover.

Goodreads description--She has loved him for as long as she remembers. He is fast discovering his newfound attachment. And now they may never see each other again. Phoebe Tunstall has lived her entire life in the shadow of her outgoing twin sister and in service to her maiden aunt. When she suddenly finds herself alone and free of all responsibility to others, she decides to heed the challenge thrown out by the man she has long admired-her brother's best friend, Lord Ingram. Frederick Ingram is reeling from the shock of learning that his first love has married someone else upon mere weeks' acquaintance. Filled with frustration, he is unable to watch his friend's little sister, Phoebe, living meekly and waiting for happiness to come to her. He tells her to live more boldly. What he does not expect is for her to take it to heart and travel to Brussels as Napoleon begins his march northward. Frederick arrives in Brussels for his military duty and-contrary to his expectation-does not find Phoebe cowering in fear at the threat of the emperor's invasion. Instead, she appears to be the center of Society with every male eye in the city on her. Phoebe is eager to show Frederick exactly what he has been missing out on all these years, and he is finally ready to declare his love. Then war breaks out.

I was looking forward to Phoebe's story through this series. She was the twin I could relate to between her and Anna. Phoebe has been in love with Frederick as long as she can remember. Frederick is her brother's best friend and the brother of one of her best friends. If something happened between them and that ended up ruining the friendship between their two families, Phoebe would be devastated. But what's more devastating is that Frederick never seems to see her. Not the way she wants to be seen anyway.

Frederick had his heart broken. He had an agreement with a lady who backed out of the arrangement in favor of another man. His eyes have now been opened to her true character. He dares Phoebe in passing one day to do something bold, daring, and unexpected. And she decides to take him up on it.

Phoebe decides it's time she quit pining over a man who does not see her. And she takes her friend's offer to travel with her and her husband to Brussels. Only war is heading toward Brussels, and Frederick is sent to the area, as well. Frederick expects Phoebe to rush back home, but she isn't interested in doing that. He's now there and in danger. As well as her friend's husband who is also in the military. She can't think of abandoning them.

Frederick begins to see a change in Phoebe. She isn't who he always thought her to be. She is coming out of her shell and being the center of attention in Brussels. Many of the men have their eyes on her, one in particular. Frederick and Phoebe grow closer just as war does.

A Daring Proposal was a quick listen for me. And I really enjoyed the historical facts included in the text, specifically the battle that took place. I could picture the scene so clearly. And Jennie Goutet did a great job making it feel like history was coming to life. Of course, the romance has to drive the story in most cases for me to love a book, and that didn't disappoint. A Daring Proposal was a good close to this series and gets 4 Stars from me.

Monday was a pretty normal and good day. Tuesday, we went to my parents' house so they could watch the kids while I ran to have my first mammogram. I have a family history on my dad's side of breast cancer, so my doctor wanted me to have an early baseline mammogram. All was normal so that's good. We got home, and I decided to split what we normally do for school between that day and Thursday afternoon because we've been taking Thursdays off for the last few weeks. Wednesday was Valentine's Day. My kiddos love it because Daddy gives them candy and helium balloons. It ended up being a terrible behavior day. Thursday we had a field trip to the museum of fine arts in our area. The kids ended up really enjoying it. I was worried that my boys wouldn't. My daughter was a given because she loves all things art. Then we went to my parents' house for lunch because we were so close by. Thursday night Little Girl had martial arts and Little Boy had baseball evaluations so we had to go in two different directions. Friday was also a challenging behavior day. It comes and goes, right? But I'm thankful to be home and homeschooling where we have extra opportunities to work on these behavior challenges. Saturday, the temperature dropped here. I did have to do a small Walmart run and we decided to get Chick-fil-a for lunch. The big kids cleaned their rooms which is totally noteworthy.

Goodreads description--From New York Times bestselling author Amy Harmon comes a sweepingly romantic tale of risk, redemption, and what happens when America’s most famous outlaw falls in love. When infamous outlaw Butch Cassidy decides to go straight, he discovers that too many of the powerful men he crossed won’t let bygones be bygones. To have a chance at a new life, he’ll have to become someone else entirely. A brief, fateful encounter with the celebrated singer Jane Touissant on the eve of his escape offers a glimpse of what might have been, but Butch disappears, leaving her behind, until their paths unexpectedly converge again in Paris. Despite having discovered his true identity, Jane trusts the outlaw and enlists his protection on her upcoming American tour. Although Butch is reluctant to agree, fearing his sordid past may put the woman and her young son in danger, the salvation she offers is too hard to resist. As they set forth on their journey, Butch’s past and Jane’s secrets put them at risk from threats far greater than the law, and this legend of the American West will have to decide what matters most―his life, his legacy, or the woman he loves.

Goodreads description--She was born to lead London Society. He could not leave it fast enough.

With a few well-placed words in the right ear, Anna Tunstall can direct anyone to do her bidding, exactly the skill needed for one destined to be the wife of a man in politics. A summer visit to a friend’s country estate is the perfect distraction before the London Season begins and Anna can achieve her ambition of a perfect match.

Harry Aston has spurned the noble aspirations of his family to enter holy orders where he might make a difference in people’s lives. His mother’s untiring attempts to find him a wife worthy—and wealthy—enough to suit him only serve to set up his back. He has never been in love, and she should not think that suitable wives dropped down from heaven, especially not in the village of Avebury.

When Harry finds Anna unconscious on the road, and she awakens in his arms, his world shifts at her gaze. But before he can think that heaven has come through at last, he must convince Anna that her prolonged stay in Avebury is not fate’s way of toying with her, but rather opening her eyes to a new direction for her ambitions—and her heart.

Anna is very different from me. Sometimes this makes reading a character more fun, and other times it makes them hard to relate to. Anna comes off as shallow. She likes gossip and fashion. And she bonded with...oh shoot...what was her name?...her friend over these things before her friend married and moved from London. Anna is now on her way to visit her friend before her confinement while her husband is away at war. Anna is headstrong and often disregards logic and sense for her own whims. She's one of those people that thinks "Oh, that could never happen to me." But it seems "that" often does happen to her.

After dismissing the idea of traveling with any sort of male escort and only hiring a temporary maid, her coach is robbed by highwaymen. Anna is found by Harry, the local vicar, and deposited with her friend to recover. Harry is almost immediately taken with Anna's beauty. But he needs to know there is more to Anna than her looks.

Harry is of noble birth, but all things London and high society rub him completely wrong. Most especially, his family. He does battle with wondering whether Anna is as surface level as she gives off because as a vicar, he needs his bride to be deeper than that and concerned with more than simply herself. Anna does rise to the occasion, but I was a little disappointed that he didn't probe deeper into her faith. As a vicar, I would imagine it isn't good enough to have a kind wife. Wouldn't you need a believing wife as well? And given the main role that Harry has, I would have expected to see some deeper religious themes used throughout the book. I wasn't put off by it, but it was something I noted.

A Faithful Propopsal has a few mysteries wrapped up in the overall storyline. Who are the highwaymen who robbed Anna at the beginning of the book? Why were her possessions returned to her? Anna's friend's husband is missing. Will he return or will she finally receive news that he is dead? Or will he remain missing? This was perhaps one of my favorite parts of the overall story, and I can't spoil anything surrounding it.

A Faitfhul Proposal wasn't a perfect book for me. I had a few issues with Anna as a character, to begin with. I wanted to see a little more depth to Anna where Harry was concerned. Sure I didn't expect her to change just for his sake, but are they truly the best fit for each other? I did enjoy the side stories because they didn't take over the main plot, but I felt like they truly did add to the story instead of take away which can sometimes happen in romantic mysteries. I give A Faithful Proposal 3 Stars. Have you read (or listened to) A Faithful Proposal? What did you think?

Goodreads description--Lord Benning is no ordinary nobleman. The heir to an earldom, he feels more at home working on the farm at his country estate than socializing in the ballrooms of London. So when a mysterious, veiled woman mistakes him for a farmhand, he takes the assumption in stride. And though he is not offended, he is intrigued.

Following a devastating outbreak of smallpox, Caroline Granger and her young daughter, Meg, retreat to Caroline’s childhood home in the village of Leyfield in Gloucestershire. Left widowed and weakened by the ravages of the disease, Caroline wears a veil to hide her facial scars and to prevent the inevitable gasps of horror or murmurs of pity others offer in response to her altered appearance.

Caroline is mortified when she learns of her error in addressing Lord Benning—or Benedict, as she called him during their growing-up years—as a farmhand. But shared childhood memories and a precocious four-year-old inevitably draw Benedict and Caroline together, and it’s not long before Caroline realizes that Benedict accepts every part of her—including her scars. With newfound courage and a growing love for Benedict, Caroline feels the first stirrings of hope. But when the disease that took so much from Caroline finds its way to Leyfield, she stands to lose more than she can bear, and Benedict must decide exactly how much he is willing to risk for a chance at love.

Goodreads description--Orphaned at a young age, Eleanor wants nothing more than to settle in a home of her own. Stratford, having met once with betrayal, desires a woman who will be true. When a complicated inheritance forces them together, they little expect this to be the answer to their innermost desires.

Eleanor Daventry has come into money, but the inheritance comes with a condition: she must marry to have it. Steadfast and independent, she would rather become a schoolmistress than take a husband she does not love.

Stratford Tunstall has just discovered his predecessor willed the estate’s unentailed land to Miss Daventry. Although cynical regarding love, the man recognizes a practical solution when he sees one. He and Miss Daventry must marry, and Stratford wastes no time in pressing his suit—with disastrous results.

In the face of such an insulting proposal, Eleanor flees to London where she lands unwittingly in the home of Stratford’s closest friends. Now thrown together constantly, Eleanor can't help admiring his masterful apologies, never mind how often he must deliver them. Stratford concedes that, against all his predictions, Eleanor enjoys success with the ton. How fortunate. Now, if only her suitors didn’t feel the need to apply to him for advice.

When combined forces threaten Eleanor’s reputation, Stratford realizes it's more than her land he cares about. Somehow, he'll have to convince Eleanor that his coming to her rescue is a deed inspired by love.

I listened to this one on audiobook and finished it over a month before writing this review.

Stratford has recently come into his title. If I remember correctly, this wasn't a title he was expecting to inherit in the first place. He's taken some time to adjust to his new role, and now it's time for the estate business to be handled. Stratford finds out that his uncle (I think) entailed the most profitable part of his land to an orphan. But he left it on the condition that she marry. Stratford is a practical man, and he's also had his heart broken. Once secretly engaged, his previous fiance broke off the engagement for another man when he went to war . The problem is, she never ended up marrying the other man either, and now she has her sights set back in Stratford. He isn't interested anymore now that he's seen her true colors.

Eleanor never expected to marry. She has always imagined that she would become a governess or school mistress. The fact that she has some land to inherit isn't moving her toward marriage as one might expect. Instead, she sees the land as being the only thing many of the men who seem interested in her want. They don't want her. They want her potential land. Stratford, himself, is one of them. He proposed to her almost immediately upon finding out the situation....only he was drunk and insulting while he did it.

Stratford realizes quickly that he needs to apologize, and he is interested in Eleanor for more than the land. The trouble is that he keeps making mistakes that he needs to apologized for. I suppose I've just restated the description. So I'll say that I laughed at Stratford and wanted to shake him a little for his missteps. Eleanor was a little obtuse when it came to Stratford's feelings. But I'm thankful she didn't show much interest in the other gentlemen who attempted to court her. Although giving up security isn't easy, Eleanor knew she would rather marry for love than for convenience.

The side characters are wonderful. Eleanor's friend, Lydia, had her own story. Lydia is a bit silly, and she has a journey to find her own match in this book as well. I do love when I get a two for one. Lydia's story might have been the more romantic of the two. I won't give too much away, but multiple gentlemen are interested in her. One of which seems to have no shot at winning her. He is more serious, but Lydia realizes that his regard for her is genuine. Their story was a wonderful addition to this book. Phoebe and Anna are twins, and they lead the next two books in the series. Lydia's brother is also Stratford's best friend so we learn about him in this book.

I definitely saw the nods to Jane Austen. I can't remember all of them, but I feel like the opening line or sequence of this one was basically a direct reference. And then there were others throughout as well. I like these little bits of fan service and honoring of the authors who have come before and so many lovers of historical fiction adore.

A Regrettable Proposal gets 3.5 Stars. I enjoyed the audiobook narrator, Annadee Morgan, did a great job as well. A good story with a two for one romance. The side characters are enjoyable which is great since the series continues on with them. Have you read or listened to A Regrettable Proposal by Jennie Goutet? What did you think?

Monday and Tuesday I was still struggling with sickness. I did take the kids to the library and to the park. But Tuesday afternoon I was able to get in with the doctor to get some medicine for this infection. Thankfully I'm feeling much better. Wednesday was a mostly normal day. Thursday, we spent the day at my parent's house. They've got a contract on a new house and on their current house. So I've been helping them paint when I go over. Friday was a normal school day, but after Husband got off work we all went to my parents so he and I could both help paint. It was a later night than we're used to. Saturday, we had a ladies' devotion with the women from church. That was edifying and needed. Husband also went over to my parent's house to paint on Saturday. I wish I could have helped, but someone needed to be home during Little Boy's nap. It ended up being a rainy day anyway. Big Boy has baseball evaluations today. So we'll be at the ball field after church this afternoon.

This Western reimagining of the classic Cinderella fairy tale is an enchanting story of courage, family, and the power of true love.

Sunshine incarnate Bhanu brings big UX energy to whatever she does, including going for the promotion where her only serious competition is her work nemesis, AKA Sunny, the grump with the Denzel voice. She expected to get a reprieve from him while visiting her family in Hawai’i, but the universe has other plans. When Bhanu runs into Sunny at the hotel and witnesses his ex criticizing him about being single, Bhanu does the first thing that comes to she impetuously claims to be Sunny’s girlfriend just to get some peace and quiet. Except Sunny is on island for a friend’s wedding and his ex has already texted the entire wedding party about this mysterious girlfriend.

Bhanu truly is the bane of Sunny’s existence. But the last thing he wants to do is cause tension during his friend’s wedding festivities, much less be the object of their pity. He has no choice except to play along, if only he and Bhanu can put aside their quarreling and act like a real couple.

Between Bhanu’s hilariously meddling family and Sunny’s ecstatic friends, the two are pushed closer together, even as stress mounts over the impending promotion.

They say what happens on island, stays on island. But as Sunny and Bhanu let their guards down, will either of them be able to resist this romantic getaway without crossing the line?

Goodreads description--For once, he has met a lady less inclined to marry than he is. How unfortunate that she is the only bride he will consider.

George Clavering is much too young to think about getting married. Yes, his older brother—and even his younger sister—have managed to tie the knot, but he has plenty more years of play and sporting events ahead of him before he need consider such a thing. Even matchmaking becomes a sport when gentlemen bet on the Season’s successes or failures in the club. He will not give them an opportunity to bet on him. Furthermore, why settle down when there are young women like Lady Alice who liven the sport of matchmaking with friendly wagers?

Lady Alice St. Clair is the fifth daughter of the Duke of Carr, and as she is independently wealthy and may do as she pleases, she has no reason to wed. She certainly has no intention of doing so. If the marriage mart offers nothing more than the unattractive boors who have presented themselves at her door for the past five seasons, it should hardly surprise her parents she cannot be persuaded to the altar. True, George Clavering has a full head of dark hair and a smile that is as mischievous as it is attractive, but no lady of character would change her mind for one above-average specimen of the male race.

For both, what began as a friendly bet between two bored guests at a ball turned into an earnest desire to help their protégés find happiness. And if some deeper feelings should stir in George to win Alice’s heart, then he has no choice but to dampen them. After all, Lady Alice has sworn she will not marry, and George has applauded her decision. For him to try to weaken her resolve now would be…unsportsmanlike.

Alice is the fifth daughter of the Duke of Carr. She has determined that she will not marry. She isn't interested in the slightest, even though many men have proposed. None of them have captured her attention or interest, and she doesn't believe most are genuinely interested in her at all. They all want her position and wealth. She is independently wealthy, but the moment she marries, her money will go to her husband. And she has no wish to be dominated over or directed by a husband. She doesn't dance when at balls, assemblies, or parties because doing so sends the message that she's interested or on the market. She stumbles into an alcove that happens to be occupied by George Clavering at a ball one night, and the two spend the time together in pleasant conversation.

George is also against the idea of marriage. It isn't that he never plans to marry, but he sees himself as being too young. He is enjoying life as it is right now, mostly hanging out with his friends. And he doesn't want that to end. The idea of getting married feels stifling to him. But when Lady Alice suggests his friend and another young lady would make a great match, he wagers with her that they will not. The wager puts George and Lady Alice in a situation where they "meet" to converse more frequently. I appreciated that neither party tried to sabotage the other, even though Lady Alice might have done a little to move the couple towards each other.

The same night George and Alice make their wager, George is somewhat tricked into wagering whether Lady Alice will marry this season or not. George feels guilty about making this last wager, but he quickly forgets about it as it wasn't a big deal to him at the moment. It doesn't take long for George to realize that he enjoys Lady Alice's company, and Lady Alice enjoys his. However, it does take a while for her to realize that she might accept George should he intend to ask her. But there's a problem. George knows that she doesn't intend to marry, and if he asks her to marry him, then he becomes just like all the other men who have disregarded her thoughts in favor of their own.

I felt like some of the conflict of The Sport of Matchmaking could have easily been avoided, but I didn't dwell on that too long or let it ruin my enjoyment of the story. And of course, I loved the happily ever after these two ended up with. I imagine the series is over, but I wouldn't mind getting books from George's friends eventually. I'll have to look and see if Jennie Goutet's other books might include them. The Sport of Matchmaking gets 4 Stars. Stevie Zimmerman does a wonderful job narrating, as always.

Goodreads description--A heart-stirring romance of star-crossed love, feuding familias, and the bonds of sisterhood by USA Today bestselling author Priscilla Oliveras.

Two familias in Texas, both alike in dignity, rivalries, and passion…

Having grown up in the nurturing household of Casa Capuleta, Mariana will do anything for familia. To solve her adoptive parents’ financial problems amid their rapidly changing San Antonio comunidad, Mariana and her younger sisters are determined to win the Battle of the Mariachi Bands. That means competing against Hugo Montero, their father’s archnemesis, and his band and escalating a decades-old feud. It also raises the stakes of Mariana’s forbidden attraction for a certain dark-eyed mariachi who sets her heart racing.

To Angelo Montero’s familia, Mariana is also strictly off-limits. But that doesn’t stop him from pursuing her. As their secret affair intensifies and the competition grows fierce, they’re swept up in a brewing storm of betrayals, rivalries, and broken ties. Against the odds, they vow to bring peace. But sacrifices must be made and consequences weighed for two star-crossed lovers to make beautiful music together.

I got this years ago as an Amazon Kindle First book. I put it off because it wasn't a priority at the time. Books I get for review from publishers take first priority, and then I have such a backlog of books that I want to read on my own that it took a long time to get around to this one. I finally decided to pick it up.

Obviously, West Side Love Story is a retelling of Romeo and Juliet. I was worried about this book following too closely to the source material. Certain pieces from the original need to be done, but not all. And Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy after all. I don't so much enjoy reading tragedies. I don't mind a book making me cry, but I want the ending to be filled with hope and not so much death and finality.

I wasn't sure what I was expecting, but I ended up hooked pretty early with West Side Love Story. Mariana and Angelo meet one night randomly but don't learn who each other is at that meeting. They have chemistry and share a moment that neither one of them can easily forget. Angelo first finds out who Mariana is and has to talk her into being friends with him. A shaky friendship turns into an alliance and then into more.

Angelo's parents are both dead and he is the sole guardian of his younger sister who is fourteen years old now. His uncle offered him a place to live and a job when his parents died, and he's been very thankful for that. Only he's never understood his uncle's feud with the Capuleta family. Working for his uncle, he's never seen any illegal or underhanded business dealings that his uncle is rumored to participate in, but Angelo now has a reason not to turn a blind eye to such things.

Mariana is adopted. All of her siblings are. Her parents have taken in many girls who needed a home and a family. And they run a community center that helps many other families and members of their community. Mariana is used to keeping her family together by being the one that most of the others turn to. Her pride in her family and their love for each other was heartwarming. It made them all so easy to root for. Each of the sisters had personalities to jump off the page, especially Cat and Nina (the youngest and newest member of the family, currently just fostering).

The physical scenes are mostly mild. Any actual acts are mostly skipped. I will say there was more description leading up to events or imagining them than what actually happened.

West Side Love Story was better than I expected. Some of the retelling pieces from Romeo and Juliet was a bit "on the nose", but I also appreciated where Priscilla Oliveras decided to detour from the source material. I liked the side characters. Cat was a little bossy and pushy for my taste, but I will say that I'm interested in her story which is book 2. Ultimately, I give West Side Love Story 4 Stars.

Monday was a normal day. Tuesday, we got groceries, and then after lunch we met up with a friend at a playground at a church near us. I started to feel a sore throat by the time we got home and quickly went downhill. Wednesday, the kids were very well behaved and I was so thankful since I was feeling so crummy. Thursday, I took the boys to get haircuts. This was Baby Boy's first big boy haircut. His hair was longish, bright blonde, and curly. Much of his bright blonde was cut off and so it's no longer curly. I miss his long hair, curly hair. But I also want to allow him to grow up. Then we went to my parent's house. They've got a contract on a new house that is set to close in 45 days. So they are scrambling to get the painting on their current house finished. They listed it for sale on Friday. Friday was decent. The kids started off well behaved. By the time we got to independent school subjects things started breaking down a little. Little Girl ended up going to a friend's great-grandmother's house who lives at the end of our street after she was done with school. And Little Boy went to Grammy's house which is two houses down. Saturday, Little Girl had a softball camp. This is her third year going to it. She was so excited to go and see some of her school friends. Softball and baseball season is starting really soon.

Goodreads description--Roald Dahl's beloved novel hits the big screen in July 2016 in a major motion picture adaptation directed by Steven Spielberg from Amblin Entertainment and Walt Disney Pictures.
When Sophie is snatched from her orphanage bed by the BFG (Big Friendly Giant), she fears she will be eaten. But instead the two join forces to vanquish the nine other far less gentle giants who threaten to consume earth’s children. This beautiful hardcover gift edition of Dahl's classic features the original illustrations by Quentin Blake, as well as a silk ribbon marker, acid-free paper, gilt stamping on a full-cloth cover, decorative endpapers, and a sewn binding.

So Roald Dahl is not my favorite author, but he is a classic children's fiction author. And I want my kids to be exposed to classic literature of all kinds. They both loved Matilda so I figured I would introduce The BFG next. I've also been trying to find a way to incorporate more books into our day-to-day. I mean we read from a chapter book every other night before bed, my daughter has independent reading to do, but I want to incorporate more family reading. I decided that we'd try listening to audiobooks in the car whenever we're driving around to various places. And I chose The BFG for our first book.

The very first chapter had my big kids on the edge of their literal seats. I knew what was coming, but I happened to look in the rearview mirror to see their jaws dropped and I don't know that my car has ever been that silent except when all three have been asleep. I knew this was the right choice for the first audiobook for them. They went through phases of requesting to listen to the book in the car and phases of asking not to listen. Some chapters hooked them more than others, but of course, towards the end, they were excited to see how things were going to end.

As for me, I'm also glad that I chose to listen to the audio version of The BFG instead of reading it out loud to them. I don't always do well reading aloud nonsense words. And The BFG is full of nonsense or mixed-up words. The audio version made these funny and enjoyable rather than frustrating for me stumbling over them had I been trying to read them aloud. And we had a fun discussion after the book was over about which nonsense BFG words were our favorites.

My kids immediately wanted to watch the movie after we finished the book, and so I think they both enjoyed it. Even my two-year-old asked to listen to the book about the giant. As for me, these stories aren't my favorite. I enjoy anything that's going to help my kids enjoy books and stories, but I'm thankful I didn't have to read it myself. I never read The BFG growing up, so there's no nostalgia for me. The BFG still gets 4 Stars. And I highly recommend the audiobook. Have you read (or listened to) The BFG?

Goodreads description--A heartbroken man, a frustrated spinster, and a marriage of convenience that proves quite inconvenient.

Simon Kingsley is in desperate need of a wife. After years of searching, he finally found love. Unfortunately, she wed another, and now, it’s time to settle for someone with whom he can share his life. Love is no longer an option for a man whose heart is irrevocably broken.

Mina Ashbrook longs to marry for love but knows she’s too old, too plump, and too plain to catch a gentleman’s eye. And a marriage of convenience is better than being a spinster sister living off her brother’s charity. Simon may not love her now, but Mina knows there’s hope—if she can convince him that love comes in many forms.

Will Mina find a way to heal Simon’s heart? Or will the shadows of the past keep them from finding happiness together?

Mina's mother died many years ago, and Mina stepped into the role of mother and mistress of the house to serve in her place. She raised her younger brothers as best she could when all they wanted was their mother back. She ran the household and learned how to manage an estate, at least the female duties. She's described as being a bit overweight, frumpy, and unattractive. She's now 30 years old and basically considered a spinster. She is tired of being overlooked and unwanted. And now that Nicholas has married, his wife has taken over the role of mistress and hostess of their home. Mina is unneeded. Her grandmother left her a cottage, but when her father passed away, he didn't leave her the income she expected to be able to run the cottage. So she's stuck. Even though her brothers love her and she wouldn't say she is unwanted, she desires more than anything to have her own home to run and to be useful.

Simon had his heart broken when the woman he was in love with decided to marry another man. He still carries a torch for her. And he is determined that he will never love again. In truth, Simon doesn't know the difference between love and attraction because his parents and family never showed him any of the real deal. He needs a wife to help him run his estate, but he just can't seem to get past how the one he wanted is no longer an option.

Man I have to tell you that I spent most of this book wanting to kick Simon in the teeth. I suppose we don't know what we don't know. And Simon knew nothing about true love. But sheesh. In his efforts to work so hard at not having a marriage that mimicked his parents in any sort of way, he was doing nearly everything possible to bring about the very thing. My heart hurt for Mina because once again she was chosen, but only as the second option. I applauded her when she decided to stand up for herself. And honestly, I felt a bit like Simon got off too easy. But there's no point in repaying pain for pain.

I really enjoy the narrator Madeleine Brolly. She did a wonderful job.

I didn't want to stop listening to Flame & Ember. I'm pretty sure I dozed off a time or two when I was trying to squeeze in just a few more minutes before bed. Simon and Mina do have a good story about the journey of finding a deeper love than initial attraction. And Mina, in particular, was a wonderful, heartwarming character who persevered in times of struggle yet maintained her goodness above those around her. Yet, the desire to shake some sense into Simon did deflate my overall enjoyment just a smidgen, which means I think Flame & Ember deserves 3.5 Stars.

Goodreads description--Can a marriage based on obligation become something meaningful?

Benjamin Leigh is at a crossroads. Having reached his majority, his parents expect him to do his duty and break the entail that keeps them from selling off bits of the family’s estate. Doing so would destroy his family’s legacy, but to deny his parents would bring their wrath down upon his head.

Bigger troubles arrive when Benjamin receives a letter from a dear schoolmaster, who was more a father figure than a teacher. On his deathbed, he begs Benjamin to provide for his beloved daughter, who hasn’t money or connections to protect her once he is gone.

Yet to do so would ruin her reputation.

Unless she is his wife.

Nan Price is stuck in a difficult situation. Whilst reeling from the death of her father, she finds herself turned out of the only home she’s ever known and barely able to feed herself, leaving her little choice when an old pupil of her father’s arrives and offers a marriage of convenience.

With their present in upheaval and their future in question, they return to Benjamin’s family’s home and his parents’ disapproval at his having married a girl of such low standing—and they will do anything to be rid of Nan and free their estate from the entail.

Can Benjamin remain strong against his parents’ machinations when their financial aid is the only thing keeping the young couple from the poor house? How will he provide for his wife without their support?
