Goodreads description--In this romantic dramedy from the author of Alex, Approximately, a teen girl’s way-too-ordinary life is driven off the beaten path when she’s abandoned in the wilderness with her worst adversary—the boy who broke her heart.

Ever since last year’s homecoming dance, best friends-turned-best enemies Zorie and Lennon have made an art of avoiding each other. It doesn’t hurt that their families are the modern day, Californian version of the Montagues and Capulets.

But when a group camping trip goes south, Zorie and Lennon find themselves stranded in the wilderness. Alone. Together.

What could go wrong?

With no one but each other for company, Zorie and Lennon have no choice but to hash out their issues via witty jabs and insults as they try to make their way to safety. But fighting each other while also fighting off the forces of nature makes getting out of the woods in one piece less and less likely. And as the two travel deeper into Northern California’s rugged backcountry, secrets and hidden feelings surface. But can Zorie and Lennon’s rekindled connection survive out in the real world? Or was it just a result of the fresh forest air and the magic of the twinkling stars?

Sigh. Well Starry Eyes is a mixed bag for me.

What I liked:

In a lot of ways Zorie reminded me of myself. She is a planner and a scheduler because it gives her a sense of being in control. I am the same way. If things go off plan Zorie begins to freak out with anxiety to the point of getting hives. Now I'm not this bad. My mood is certainly influenced by whether or not things are going according to my plans and I definitely struggle with anxiety when I can't control certain aspects of my plans, but I don't break out in hives. And with being a parent I've 100% learned that no matter how much I might wish otherwise I can't control other people. But all of this made her relatable to me.

Lennon. At first, I didn't know what to think about him. He obviously has some strong feelings toward Zorie but I wasn't sure of his motivation. As his story and perspective are revealed my heart completely broke for him. He was an absolute rock through most of the book and I loved that about him.

The camping adventure. Now I'm going to be honest and say that I have no true desire to go camping much less backpacking at this point in my life. But it was fun to read about. The Sierras provided a setting I don't often read about, and I really enjoyed it.

What I didn't like (minor spoilers ahead):

The cheating. This is something I don't enjoy reading about. I know it happens because it has touched my own family. But that's why I'm so sensitive to reading about it. It brings back memories and emotions that I'd just rather keep in the past.

LGBT. Lennon's birth mother is now married to another woman. While I liked Sunny and Mac individually in what instances they were present in the story. They were very supportive of Lennon, and they were more present and supportive than Zorie's own father. But I just don't agree with this lifestyle and don't enjoy reading about it any more than I enjoy reading about cheating or time travel.

Meagan. I didn't feel like her character was completely flushed out. She was apparently angry with Zorie for her friendship with Avani yet Meagan didn't even seem to like Zorie all that much from a personal level. I mean obviously they have issues but how were they even friends in the past much less enough for Meagan to be jealous. Plus Meagan was the one who'd made a new group of friends.

So yeah. Starry Eyes had some parts that I really enjoyed and others that I didn't care for. For that reason, I'm giving Starry Eyes 3 Stars. Have you read Starry Eyes? What did you think? Let me know!

Goodreads description--What is more important? Friendship, loyalty or love?

Colleen Hoover and Griffin Peterson collaborate once again to bring fans of Maybe Someday back into the musical world of Ridge Lawson and Sydney Blake.

And Maggie.

And Warren and Bridgette.

This full length novel is a follow-up to the New York Times bestselling novel, Maybe Someday. For the best reading experience, Maybe Now should be read after Maybe Someday and the spin-off novella, Maybe Not. However, Maybe Now can also be read immediately following Maybe Someday.

Maybe Someday has been one of my least favorite Colleen Hoover books. And I was so disappointed about that because with the description and set up and inclusion of actual music I was set to love it. But not only was there cheating which I absolutely HATE but I also felt like Ridge only chose Sydney when Maggie was no longer a choice. Even though I really did feel like he loved Sydney in a different way than he loved Maggie, I struggled with knowing that Sydney was his second choice. I loved the idea that Maggie might get her happily ever after in Maybe Now, but I wasn't completely excited about returning to Ridge and Sydney given the origin of their relationship. So I put off reading Maybe Now. When we were on our cruise though, I needed something to read while we sat on the deck and Maybe Now was a great contemporary pick that I devoured.

Maybe Now addressed pretty much all of my issues from Maybe Someday and gave me some closure that I didn't even know I needed. The whole crew goes through some major therapeutic moments throughout the series. And even though I worried about revisiting Ridge and Sydney, I loved being able to see how all of the characters (including Warren and Bridgette) worked through the pain they've caused each other to heal and move forward. And it ended up being nice to work through some of my own issues with these characters alongside them.

I never disliked Maggie in Maybe Someday. But Maybe Now made her more understandable. I don't love that she jumped into a physical relationship with Jake so soon. This is a pet peeve of mine. I want relationships to be built upon substance and emotion rather than physical encounters. Yet I loved these two together. Maggie has finally found someone who understands her in the way she needs.

Warren and Bridgette weren't the main characters by any means, but I also enjoyed seeing more of them. Even though they are so weird. They just work together.

I will say that I found the very end to be a little too cheesy for my tastes. I like cheesy, but goodness.

Maybe Now was the perfect read for where I was in the moment. I finished it basically within a day. I am glad that Colleen Hoover addressed so many of my issues with Maybe Someday and I have quite a bit more closure on the story and the characters. I do want to know more about Brennan and Sadie though. Maybe Now gets 4.5 Stars. Have you read Maybe Now? What did you think? Let me know!

Ten Books I Still Need to Read by My Favorite Authors

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. This week's topic is Top Ten Books I Still Need to Read by My Favorite Authors.

  1. Heartless by Mariss Meyer - I really have no real reason for having not read this except that I don't have it in my possession.
  2. From Sand and Ash by Amy Harmon - I love Amy Harmon, but I still wonder if I will enjoy this one.
  3. Dark Age (Red Rising, # 5) by Pierce Brown - This series is so heavy emotionally for me that I need time to recover before reading each new book. I hope to get this for Christmas.
  4. Kingdom of Ash (Throne of Glass, # 7) by Sarah J Maas - This book is so long that I know I could read about 3 or 4 shorter ones in the same amount of time so I keep putting it off.
  5. Restore Me (Shatter Me, # 4) by Tahereh Mafi - I liked the way things wrapped up and I'm not sure how I feel about revisiting this series.
  6. A Convenient Fiction (Parish Orphans of Devon, # 3) by Mimi Matthews - Since I was denied a review request for this one I just haven't gotten around to buying it. Maybe I'll get it for Christmas too. I know I'll read it quickly once I get my hands on it.
  7. Maybe This Time by Kasie West - Another one I was denied a review copy for and I haven't purchased it so maybe this will be another that I find under the Christmas tree.
  8. Never Never Part 3 by Colleen Hoover & Tarryn Fisher - This is one of those rare times when I'm not sure I even want to bother. Everyone seems quite disappointed with this book so I'm not sure I'll bother reading it. Especially since you can't buy it on kindle anymore and you have to get the set to get access to it.
  9. Anathema (Casual Enchantment, # 1) by KA Tucker - This series was out before I found KA Tucker. I've read all of her published books (except one) that have released since I found her, but I haven't read this series.
  10. The Glittering Court (The Glittering Court, # 1) by Richelle Mead - I started this one. I got about 30 or 40% into it and didn't like the direction it was headed so I put it down. I've actually gotten it from the library on audiobook, but I haven't finished it yet.

Do you have any favorite authors that you've not read all of their books yet? Let me know!
