Sunday Post - 194 & Stacking the Shelves - 138

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ The Caffeinated Book Reviewer ~this meme was inspired in part by ~ In My Mailbox~ It's a chance to share News. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.

Monday I took Baby Girl to work to see Daddy. Since that's where I used to work too and my entire family still works there we had many people to see. Unfortunately we didn't get around to everyone. Not much else happened this week. My husband's sister and family are here this weekend to celebrate Mother's Day, and we're having my family over to our house for dinner to celebrate Mother's Day with my mom. So I've spent time this week cleaning house and prepping for that. Also today is my 7th wedding anniversary. Husband and I have known each other for almost 12 years. It amazes me how fast time goes. I know in the blink of an eye I'll be looking back on my 12 year old baby girl (and Lord willing other children). I pray everyone has a Happy Mother's Day...celebrating their own mothers or being celebrated as a mother.

Goodreads description--Every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born: three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.

But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose…it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins. The last queen standing gets the crown.

If only it was that simple. Katharine is unable to tolerate the weakest poison, and Arsinoe, no matter how hard she tries, can’t make even a weed grow. The two queens have been shamefully faking their powers, taking care to keep each other, the island, and their powerful sister Mirabella none the wiser. But with alliances being formed, betrayals taking shape, and ruthless revenge haunting the queens’ every move, one thing is certain: the last queen standing might not be the strongest…but she may be the darkest.

Childhood Characters I'd Like to Revisit as Adults

Top 10 Tuesday is a post hosted by The Broke and the Bookish and this week's topic is Childhood Character's I'd Like to Revisit as Adults.

Of course, I was supposed to pick ten books, but I just really had a hard time thinking of books that I'd read as a child and really feeling like there were many that I wanted to know more about. Without a doubt, I thought of this series and group of girls and I'd absolutely love an update on where they all ended up and how their lives are going as adults.

  • The Baby-Sitters Club
  • There were 7 main girls that I remember: Kristy, Claudia, Mary Anne, Stacey, Dawn, Mallory, and Jessi. I think as the series went on other members were added. Really I didn't read these books in any kind of order so I'm not 100% sure who was added when. But come on...don't you guys want to know more? For all I know the later books do cover these girls as adults, but I doubt it. Anyway...which childhood favorite characters do you want to see as adults? Let me know!

A Walk in the Sun - Review

    A Walk in the Sun

    By: Michelle Zink

Published: May 3rd 2016 by HarperTeen

    336 pages

    Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary

Goodreads description--In this Bridges of Madison County for teens, Michelle Zink weaves a magnetic tale about summer love that stays with you long after the seasons change.

Rose Darrow never wanted to spend her life working on her family’s farm. But when her family is rocked by an unexpected tragedy she has no choice but to put her plans for the future—and dreams of escaping her small town—on hold.

Bodhi Lowell left home as a kid and hasn’t looked back. Years of working farm jobs has given him the one thing he wants most: freedom to travel without answering to anyone. He’s already looking past his job at Darrow Farm and plans on leaving in September—until he meets Rose.

Neither Rose nor Bodhi can deny the sparks flying between them, but with the end of summer looming, they must decide if it is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all....

So I've been watching this show on Netflix called Heartland (which is based off a book series). Surprisingly enough, my mom recommended it to me. And it's about this family that lives on a farm/ranch in Canada. The main girl has this unique ability to work with horses. It's a great show. Anyway, I said all of that because A Walk in the Sun reminded me of Heartland a lot. There's the main girl who's mother recently passed away. There's the cattle and horses and other ranch/farm work. There's the ranch hand that a relationship begins to develop with. Several similarities. I, personally, liked Heartland better, but A Walk in the Sun was pretty good.

I found myself hooked pretty easily and quickly. It was easy to relate to Rose. She's still grieving the loss of her mother, but as her father has pretty much checked out she has to step up and essentially take care of the farm by herself. She's getting up at 4:00 am to feed the animals, goes to school, and then brings the animals back in after school. It's a grueling schedule. Thankfully, Rose's aunt has hired summer help.

Bodhi pretty much walked out of his life at fourteen years old. And he's been on the road from place to place ever since. Bodhi hasn't found anywhere that he's wanted to settle down, but he has found that he enjoys working on farms. And Bodhi sees something in Rose. Things were a bit insta-y on his part, but they don't jump in too quickly.

A Walk in the Sun was going really well until unfortunately some easily fixed problems sneak up around the 75% mark. The conflict was so easy and obvious (as well as the fix) that I found myself rolling my eyes a bit. But I didn't dwell too much.

Ultimately, A Walk in the Sun was a quick and enjoyable read for me. It wasn't earth-shattering, and I did find that the main conflict took away from my overall enjoyment. But it was still a decent book. I also really enjoyed the lack of potty mouth. I'm giving A Walk in the Sun 3.5 Stars. Have you read A Walk in the Sun? What did you think? Let me know!

A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.

Happy May!!! Let's see. Tuesday we went to have Baby Girl's tongue tie clipped. I wish we would have done it when she was much younger. My mom's Mother's Day present came in the mail this week. I'm excited to give it to her. Friday night we hung out with my sister, brother-in-law, and nephew for a while. They found out this week that they're expecting a baby girl too, and we couldn't be more excited. Speaking of babies, our nephew (who's only a year younger than me) and his wife just had their baby boy on Saturday. I'm so excited that Ever's going to have some cousins to grow up with. No new books this week, but I did end up finishing a 2nd book for this month. I was beginning to think I would only finish one book this month.
