Top Ten 2016 Beach Reads

Top 10 Tuesday is a post hosted by The Broke and the Bookish and this week's topic is Top Ten 2016 Beach Reads.

I'm only choosing between books that I already have in my possession for this year's beach reads. I usually go for light and fun contemporary reads for the beach, but this year I don't have very many of those. And I'm really trying to limit my new books until I read some that I've had sitting around for a while.

  1. Significance (Significance, # 1) by Shelly Crane
  2. Kiss of Fire (Imdalind, # 1) by Rebecca Ethington
  3. End of Days (Penryn & the End of Days, # 3) by Susan Ee
  4. The Certainty of Violet & Luke (The Coincidence, # 5) by Jessica Sorensen
  5. Ruby Red (Precious Stone Trilogy, # 1) by Kerstin Gier
  6. Being Jamie Baker (Jamie Baker, # 1) by Kelly Oram
  7. The Winner's Curse (The Winner's Curse, # 1) by Maria
  8. Stolen Songbird (The Malediction Trilogy, # 1) by Danielle L Jensen
  9. Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake
  10. Winging It (Corrigan Falls Raiders, # 3) by Cate Cameron

What are you top ten beach reads for 2016? Let me know!

Sunday Post - 197 & Stacking the Shelves - 139

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ The Caffeinated Book Reviewer ~this meme was inspired in part by ~ In My Mailbox~ It's a chance to share News. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.

Let's see. Not much has happened this week. Tuesday I woke up to our internet not working. Apparently our cable company had increased their internet speed, but that meant our current cable modem didn't work. We, of course, didn't get any letters in the mail alerting us that this was happening until AFTER. Regardless, I found out how dependent on the internet and wifi because I drove to the cable store that day after only a couple of hours to get a new modem. That being said, I didn't get my Top Ten Tuesday post done on Tuesday, but I liked the topic so I posted on Thursday. I had a hair appointment on Wednesday. Tomorrow is Memorial Day. It'll be nice for Husband to be off work again. Also, my sister plans to come over to hang out. It's been a while since we just had time to hang out. If it is warm enough, I plan to see how Baby Girl does in the pool.

Goodreads description--Disclaimer: This Entangled Teen Crush book contains adult language, ice-melting kisses, and a swoon-worthy hero. This fake relationship romance will have you wishing for a hockey player of your own…

Natalie West and Toby Cooper were best friends growing up, on and off the ice. But when Toby’s hockey career took off, their friendship was left behind. Now Natalie has a crazy plan to land her crush—Toby’s biggest rival—and she needs Toby’s help to pull it off.

When Nat asks Toby to be her fake boyfriend, he can’t say no. Not when it means getting his best friend back. But Natalie is all grown up now, and spending time with her—even when it’s just playing hockey together—stirs up a lot of feelings, old and new. Suddenly pretending to be interested in her isn’t hard at all…if only she wanted him and not his enemy.

Top Ten Books I've Changed My Mind About

Top 10 Tuesday (er...Thursday???) is a post hosted by The Broke and the Bookish and this week's topic is Top Ten Books I've Changed My Mind About.

  1. Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover - Okay you guys, CoHo is one of my favorite authors. I loved how she formated this book. I liked Miles's backstory. But I struggled with their friends with benefits relationship. Even though Ugly Love made me cry (I think), I don't look back on it as being one of my all-time favorite books.
  2. Paper Towns by John Green - I don't know how this one ended up with 4 stars. I don't really remember much that I liked about this book at all.
  3. The following books I THOUGHT I gave 5 Stars but apparently, I only gave them 4.5 Stars. Either way, I think of them all as 5 Star reads.

  4. Delirium (Delirium, # 1) by Lauren Oliver
  5. Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell
  6. If I Stay (If I Stay, # 1) by Gayle Forman
  7. Carter Finally Gets It (Carter Finally Gets It, # 1) by Brent Crawford
  8. Red Rising (Red Rising Trilogy, # 1) by Pierce Brown
  9. Golden Son (Red Rising Trilogy, # 2) by Pierce Brown
  10. To All the Boys I've Loved Before (To All the Boys I've Loved Before, # 1) by Jenny Han
  11. A Dance with Dragons (A Song of Ice and Fire, # 5) by George R R Martin

Which books have you changed your mind about after some time has passed? Let me know!

Goodreads description--From Jay Asher, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Thirteen Reasons Why, comes a romance that will break your heart, but soon have you believing again. . . .

Sierra's family runs a Christmas tree farm in Oregon—it's a bucolic setting for a girl to grow up in, except that every year, they pack up and move to California to set up their Christmas tree lot for the season. So Sierra lives two lives: her life in Oregon and her life at Christmas. And leaving one always means missing the other.

Until this particular Christmas, when Sierra meets Caleb, and one life eclipses the other.

By reputation, Caleb is not your perfect guy: years ago, he made an enormous mistake and has been paying for it ever since. But Sierra sees beyond Caleb's past and becomes determined to help him find forgiveness and, maybe, redemption. As disapproval, misconceptions, and suspicions swirl around them, Caleb and Sierra discover the one thing that transcends all else: true love.

What Light is a love story that's moving and life-affirming and completely unforgettable.

I was really impressed with 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher, and I have no idea why I've not looked into other books by him until now. What are you waiting on this week? Let me know!

Very Wicked Things - Mini Review

Very Wicked Things (Briarcrest Academy, # 2)

By: Ilsa Madden-Mills

Published: May 13th 2014 by Little Dove Publishing

332 pages

Genre: New Adult, Contemporary

Source: Personal Kindle Library

Goodreads description--Born on the poor side of town...

Ballerina Dovey Beckham is a scholarship student at Briarcrest Academy, determined to prove she’s more than just a girl with the wrong pedigree. She does whatever it takes to succeed in her endgame, even if it means surrendering her body…but never her heart.

Until the day she meets him, and he rips apart all her well-laid plans. Suddenly, the girl everyone thought unbreakable might just shatter.

Born into wealth and privilege...

Cuba “Hollywood” Hudson is rich, spoiled, and a star football player. With his fast cars and superficial girlfriends, he lives the high-life, hiding his secrets from the world.

Until the day he meets her, and she offers him something he’s never tasted... love.

But once in a lifetime kind of love doesn’t come easy. When trust crumbles and doubts creep in, both will have to decide to either love or let go... forever.

Welcome to Briarcrest Academy, where sometimes, only the wicked survive.

I don't have too much to say about Very Wicked Things, but I did want to make a few comments. I really liked how Dovey and Cuba have an entire history before the start of Very Wicked Things. Granted we do get most of their backstory in the form of flashbacks which I don't always love, but I did really like how we were thrust into the middle of their mess of a relationship rather than starting at the very beginning.

Cuba had a lot of moments that could have induced severe eye rolling. The way he pushes Dovey away and how he uses girls and sex as an escape. The way he treats Dovey isn't in any kind of way excusable even though there is a reason.

Dovey also had her moments. Despite being treated like dirt she can't stop caring for Cuba. I respect her ability to forgive, but still. Also, I struggled with her own decisions in the name of protecting those that she cares about.

Overall this was a quick read for me. It was exactly what I was in the mood for in the given moment that I read it, but I don't think Very Wicked Things will be an epic romance in my mind. I did enjoy it though. Very Wicked Things gets 3 Stars from me. Have you read Very Wicked Things? What did you think? Let me know!

*Note: There were sexual situations, but not too terribly many and not in as much detail as some new adult books. Obvious language was present as well. Just an FYI.

Sunday Post - 196

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ The Caffeinated Book Reviewer ~this meme was inspired in part by ~ In My Mailbox~ It's a chance to share News. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.

Husband was off work this week. That was so nice. Having him around the house just to spend time with, having an extra hand during the day with Baby Girl. All the good things. We took Baby Girl to the zoo for the first time on Thursday. I'm not sure she really looked at all of the animals. We'd point to the tiger and she'd keep turning her head to look at the waterfall. Either way, I know there was a lot for her to take in and lots of new things to experience. She never cried so I think she had a good time. Oh and she rode her first ride--the train around the zoo. I'm not sure that she knew what to think about that. Then Friday she turned 7 months old. I can't believe that we're almost through May already. I'm sorry if you guys get tired of reading about her each week, but seriously she's what my life is revolving around these days. And really it's only this short paragraph each week. I think I'm being rather restrained. *big cheesy smile* Saturday, we went with the extended family and various in-laws to the lake for fishing. We've never actually caught any fish, but we always have a good time just being around each other. I finished two books this week. I really have no idea how that happened, but I'll take it for sure. Still no new books. I'm not quite ready to add more to my pile just yet. Although I feel kind of sad each week to not feature any new beauties.

Cover Doubles - # 3

I started the Cover Doubles feature because I was browsing through some books and had to do a double take because I just knew the cover I was looking at was the exact same cover as a previous book I'd read before. With digital self-publishing stock photos and pre-made book covers are often used multiple times. But, I saw similarities happening with traditionally published books also. And that's what started me checking out cover trends.

I really had to stop myself. I have many more and will be starting a 4th edition post soon. Until then, here's my third edition of Cover Doubles:

Trees/Forest
