Oh man, I did not like Marie in the previous books. Having a little too much personal experience with women who want to be friends with married men yet are actually in love with them (or have a crush on them), I'm not a fan of this at all. As a matter of fact, I have a strong stance on how much men and women can be friends when one of them is married. It wouldn't be a popular stance, but protecting my marriage is more important to me than any other friendship could ever be. So I would have been happy for Marie to fall off the face of the book world.

Yet I also knew I would soften to her if I were in her head. I put off reading her book because I wanted to stay mad at her for existing and for daring to have feelings for Jonah. Thankfully, in most of this book, Marie is past her feelings for Jonah. She sees what he has with Calla. And if anything, she's not jealous of Calla being with Jonah but of wanting what Calla and Jonah have together. She just wants to love someone and be loved in return. And she's beginning to feel like it is impossible. Being in rural Alaska, her choices are slim. Not to mention, the amount of time she dedicates to her business doesn't allow for much time to socialize. 

Marie gets a tip that a new musher has moved into the area and might be mistreating his dogs. She enters his property illegally to accuse him of animal abuse. Unsurprisingly, Tyler doesn't take kindly to the accusations, stated or implied. Tyler is a widow, and his wife's younger brother lives with him. Everything he knows about mushing comes from his wife and her family. He plans to do the Idatrod Sled Dog race in honor of his wife, and he doesn't appreciate people storming onto his property and accusing him of mistreating his dogs.

Of course, Marie realizes she's wrong about her accusations, and it doesn't take her long to catch feelings for Tyler. Unfortunately, Tyle isn't quite emotionally available at first. And Marie has had her fill of emotionally unavailable men. She doesn't see the point in pursuing something that is going nowhere. And I felt for her in this respect. I was proud of her for holding her ground. But yet, I was rooting for her and Tyler at the same time.

Running Wild did exactly what I expected it to do. I softened towards Marie once I could read her thoughts and emotions. I wanted to see her get her happily ever after because she was so, so lonely. Running Wild gets 4 Stars. Have you read Running Wild? What did you think? Let me know!

Saying Goodbye to the Series Enders Reading Challenge

Holly and I started the Series Enders Reading Challenge in 2014. It makes sense that after 11 years of hosting this challenge we would finally be ready to let it go. As hard as it can be to let go of seasons that we've enjoyed, we can't hold on longer than we should. Holly hasn't been actively reading at the same level as she used to due to her current life circumstances. And even though I'd be okay with managing the challenge on my own, we've had minimal participation in the challenge for the last several years. We appreciate those participants who have supported our blogs through the years, namely we want to give a shoutout to Jessica @ a GREAT read who faithfully knocked out her series enders faster than Holly or I did. Hardly a month went by since the challenge inception that Jessica didn't link up to one or more reviews for series enders.

Since starting the series enders reading challenge in 2014, Sandy finished 95 series. We had 514 reviews linked up over all of these years. We gave away over $900 over these last 11 years to monthly and grand prize winners.

Even though the Series Enders Reading Challenge has come to an end, we are thankful for the bloggers and readers we met through the challenge. We are thankful for the push to finish the series we've been holding out on. And we're happy to have been able to give back to our supporters over the years. We still plan to keep checking series enders off our list, and we hope you do too!

I read the first chapter of The Muse of Maiden Lane at the end of The Lily of Ludgate Hill, and immediately, I felt secondhand embarrassment on behalf of Stella. She has naturally silver hair and has decided to dye it for a house party she's going to with Anne. No one there hardly knows her so she isn't worried about them knowing her hair is dyed. I wasn't aware it was culturally taboo to dye one's hair, but it makes sense that the only ones who would do so during this period would be people of questionable morals. But Stella is hoping for a connection that might turn into a marriage. And so it's obvious that she didn't quite think this through. Because even if she does find someone she connects with at the party, and she fools them into thinking she's someone who doesn't have silver hair, eventually dyes wash out. Thus she would be faced with either coming clean about her hair or attempting to maintain the ruse the rest of her life. Quite impossible. 

Stella, in fact, quickly runs into Teddy who already knows she has silver hair. Teddy is a crossover character from Mimi Matthew's Parish Orphans of Devon series. And I love that she's crossed these series. There is so much fan service. Tom Finchley already appears nearly every time she needs a solicitor. But now we have Archer and Laura crossing over with Teddy as is necessary. Teddy is now wheelchair-bound after having a bad case of scarlet fever when he was younger. He's an artist. Art is what has sustained and driven him through his challenges in life. And now he's met Stella. He feels a drive that he can't even explain to paint her. Another scandalous thing. Models in those days were usually loved ones, mistresses, or again, women of questionable morals. 

Because of Stella's choice to dye her hair, she spends time hiding from the other guests at the house party. And, she stumbles upon a drawing room that the host has allowed Teddy to use as his personal art studio during the stay. Stella and Teddy spend much of the book here getting to know one another. And Teddy spends much of that time begging her to let him paint her. 

Favoriote quotes:

-Of all the offensive masculine qualities that ladies detested, eagerness was one of the worst.

I can attest to this one. It's so offputting. 

-"Your face is the only reason I'd consider keeping it," he said frankly. "But  I don't need to." He tapped his forefinger to his temple. "You're etched up here, more indelibly than a pencil drawing. I won't easily forget you."

The Muse of Maiden Lane was probably my second favorite in the series. It's a hard tie for second place though. I had a clear favorite of the series and a clear least favorite. Stella and Teddy were both characters that I could feel for and root for a happily ever after. They had a non-traditional courtship and journey. And sometimes I balk when characters do things intentionally against the norms, but I didn't mind it in this book. It fits the characters and the story. I loved the crossovers from Mimi Matthew's previous series. I can always appreciate fan service. The Muse of Maiden Lane gets 4 Stars. Have you read The Muse of Maiden Lane? What did you think? 2024 Series Enders Reading Challenge - Sign Up

The 2023 Series Enders Reading Challenge wrapped up, and Holly and I decided we're in this for yet another year. Welcome to our 11th Annual Series Enders Reading Challenge. The rules this year are essentially the same as last year, but please be sure to check them out for a refresher.

This challenge is for all of you series readers who are scared to death of that last book in the series. You anxiously await it. You stalk it. You get your hands on it as soon as possible. But then…you put off reading it for fear that it might not be everything you thought it would be. Or, maybe you just have a backlog of series started and you need to finish that last book.

Join us in knocking out those pesky last books in a series. This is your chance. Here’s your motivation. Better than that, we have prizes!

Challenge Guidelines:

1. This challenge will run from January 1, 2024 until December 31, 2024.
2. Anyone can enter. You don’t have to have a blog just as long as you review your books somewhere: on your blog if you have one, Amazon, Goodreads, etc.
3. Any genre, length, or format is acceptable as long as it is the last book in a series where all books in the series have been published and no more books are currently intended to be published in the series. If an author makes a decision somewhere during the year to add on to the series, we will count both the original last book in the series and the “new last” book in the series assuming the author isn’t going to write more than one additional book. Last book published in a series doesn’t count if more books are expected to be published.
4. You can list your series enders ahead of time, but this is not required. If you decide to list them up front, feel free to change them throughout the year as necessary.
5. When you sign up in the linky, please use the direct link to your post about joining the 2024 Series Enders Reading Challenge. If you don’t have a blog, please post about it on Facebook or Twitter and include that direct link as your sign up.
6. You can sign up until December 15, 2024. This allows you to join the challenge at any time during the year.
7. On the 25th of every month, we will post a wrap up on both Somewhere Only We Know and Words Fueled by Love with a linky for you to link up your reviews for the month. The monthly giveaway will be open until the next wrap up post goes up (ex. From January 25th to February 25th). For each link to a review, you will get an (1) entry into a drawing for that giveaway. This will be open internationally. Please link each review separately as each link in the monthly wrap up linky acts as an entry in both the monthly giveaway and the grand prize giveaway at the end of the year.
8. Monthly giveaway prizes will be an e-gift card of your choice up to $5 (USD) from Amazon.com. I wasn't sure what headspace Dylan would be in when The Last Chance Cowboy started. But thankfully, he's repented of his wild ways and is working very hard to do better with his life. He's been elected as sheriff on a kind of temporary basis. At least until the next election. He has been sober since coming back to Colorado, and he has been staying away from women, too. I was worried he would be a drunk mess when this book started, so I'm thankful we didn't have to go through the worst of his transformation with him.

Catherine was the midwife that assisted with the birth of Dylan's illegitimate son. Kit died giving birth, but before she passed, she begged Catherine to take Austin to Dylan. Catherine didn't have plans to follow through with her agreement, but she witnesses a murder and basically runs for safety. When she arrives in Colorado, Dylan doesn't realize that she's not Kit. He was drunk for almost all of his interactions with Kit. And so he offers to marry her. Catherine has developed a bond with Austin and doesn't want to give him up. She sees that marrying Dylan might be convenient.

I know I've discussed several times that I love marriages of convenience. The concept is so foreign to our culture. But I love the idea of almost immediately being a team. It wouldn't be "convenient" if both parties didn't get something out of the arrangement. And so the relationships start with some common ground and then develop into love. It's what makes them so beautiful.

I liked that Dylan wasn't completely untempted by his former vices. He still struggles with the call of alcohol. And his understanding that he's already been intimate with Catherine causes him to attempt to be more physical with her than he originally agreed. In hindsight, I can see more things that I feel Dylan should have picked up on or questioned.

Without spoiling too much, I thought Catherine would be honest with Dylan about the mixup very early on. The first time she changed her mind and didn't tell him right away, I understood, but the longer it took her to tell him, the more frustrated with her I became.

I do find it a little unbelievable that often characters in stories like these are willing to give up their partner when they find out the secret they've been hiding. They feel betrayed and that makes them feel like they can't forgive. But when the partner is physically threatened, they suddenly realize that they can't live without them, afterall. Why is that? They were ready to be parted with them? Yet it takes a threat to their safety to make them realize how they truly feel? One of those things I probably shouldn't question too much, I guess.

The Last Chance Cowboy is a book that I was afraid I wouldn't get for review since I didn't get approved for a review copy of Falling for the Cowgirl. This made it one of my most anticipated books of 2023. I really enjoyed it. Dylan had a lot of shame and regret to work through, but when he gave his life to God, he got more in return than he could have expected. Catherine was an easily likeable character for her willingness to help those less fortunate--or whoever needed her. I happily give The Last Chance Cowboy 4 Stars. Now I wait for Astrid's book to be the first of a new spinoff series by Jody Hedlund. Have you read The Last Chance Cowboy? What did you think? Let me know!

2021 Series Enders Reading Challenge - Goals

This challenge is for all of you series readers who are scared to death of that last book in the series. You anxiously await it. You stalk it. You get your hands on it as soon as possible. But then…you put off reading it for fear that it might not be everything you thought it would be. Or, maybe you just have a backlog of series started and you need to finish that last book.

Join us in knocking out those pesky last books in a series. This is your chance. Here’s your motivation. Better than that, we have prizes!

Levels: (how many series enders you are planning to read)

Level 1: 1 – 5
Level 2: 5 – 10
Level 3: 10 – 15
Level 4: 15+

7. Emerald Green (The Ruby Red Trilogy, # 3) by Kerstin Gier
8. Sempre: Redemption (Sempre, # 2) by JM Darhower
9. Kingdom of Ash (Throne of Glass, # 7) by Sarah J Maas
10. Almost a Bride (The Bride Ships, # 4) by Jody Hedlund
11. Game Changer (The Field Party, # 6) by Abbi Glines
12. The Prince of Spies (Hope and Glory, # 3) by Elizabeth Camden
13. The Indebted Earl (Serendipity & Secrets, # 3) by Erica Vetsch
14. A Proper Scoundrel (Proper, # 3) by Esther Hatch

Of course, I likely won't get to some of these (a few of them have been on my goals list for the last seven years), or I'll come across a new/new-to-me series that I read the entire series during 2021. My real goal is level 2. These are just the enders on my radar right now.
