Sunday Post - 237 & Stacking the Shelves - 179

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ The Caffeinated Book Reviewer ~this meme was inspired in part by ~ In My Mailbox~ It's a chance to share News. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.

I really don't remember much about this week. It was rainy the first half of the week. Husband took off work on Friday. He, his mom, and I took Little Girl to the zoo. She was much more attentive to the animals this time. I mean seriously she was only about 6 or 7 months old when we took her before. But she also wanted to just run around. She loves being outside. I think her favorite animal was the rhino and the parakeets. Her eyes got so wide on the train when we went in the tunnel. It was cute. I had plans with my friend, Paula, to go see Before I Fall Saturday morning, but our plans fell through. I think we might try to go on Friday. Has anyone seen it yet? Thoughts? I've read two books already for the March Take Control of Your TBR Pile Challenge. That's a nice start to the month, but I have a few ARCs that I might have to make a priority instead of some of my old books.

Goodreads description--Los Angeles. It’s been five years since the events of the Mortal Instruments when Nephilim stood poised on the brink of oblivion and Shadowhunter Emma Carstairs lost her parents. After the blood and violence she witnessed as a child, Emma has dedicated her life to to discovering exactly what it was that killed her parents and getting her revenge.

Raised in the Los Angeles Institute with the Blackthorn family, Emma is paired as a parabatai with her best friend, Julian Blackthorn. A series of murders in the city catch her attention — they seem to have the same characteristics as the deaths of her parents. Could the murderer be the same person? And her attention isn’t the only one caught: someone has been murdering Downworlders as well. The Fair Folk make a deal with the Institute: if the Blackthorns and Emma will investigate the killings, they’ll return Mark Blackthorn to his home. The catch: they have only two weeks to find the killers. Otherwise it’s open war between faeries and Nephilim.

The Shadowhunters of the Institute must race against time to catch the killers, even as they begin to suspect the involvement of those closest to them. At the same time, Emma is falling in love with the one person in the world she’s absolutely forbidden by Shadowhunter Law to love. Set against the glittering backdrop of present-day Los Angeles, Emma must learn to trust her head and her heart as she investigates a demonic plot that stretches from the warlock-run nightclubs of the Sunset Strip to the enchanted sea that pounds the beaches of Santa Monica.

Goodreads description--A heartbreaking novel about living with your worst mistake, from New York Times bestselling author Barry Lyga.

A chunk of old memory, adrift in a pool of blood.
Sebastian Cody did something horrible, something no one--not even Sebastian himself--can forgive. At the age of four, he accidentally shot and killed his infant sister with his father's gun.
Now, ten years later, Sebastian has lived with the guilt and horror for his entire life. With his best friend away for the summer, Sebastian has only a new friend--Aneesa--to distract him from his darkest thoughts. But even this relationship cannot blunt the pain of his past. Because Sebastian knows exactly how to rectify his childhood crime and sanctify his past. It took a gun to get him into this.
Now he needs a gun to get out.
Unflinching and honest, Bang is as true and as relevant as tomorrow's headlines, the story of one boy and one moment in time that cannot be reclaimed.

Goodreads description--Melanie runs away. From conflict. From pain. From reality.

When novelist Melanie Vander faces a looming deadline, she decides it’s time for an escape to an inspiring, novel-worthy locale. She’s not running away. Really. She just needs time to focus. But as she disappears into her writing, she encounters a man whose tenderness leaves her reeling. Engaging and wise, psychologist Elliot Hammond tempts Melanie to question everything, including her marriage.

But that’s ridiculous. Dr. Hammond isn’t even…real.

Melanie’s husband, Craig, has his own problems, including a recession that’s threatening his business. Waning finances, a looming home foreclosure, and a wife who’s checked out emotionally, has Craig feeling as though he’s carrying his burdens alone. When his client, the beautiful and single Serena Buchanan, offers him a solution to his financial woes, he’s tempted by more than her offer of a business solution.

At a crossroads, Melanie and Craig seem headed in opposite directions.

As Melanie runs away from her problems by escaping into her own fictional world, Craig dives into his struggles, seeking God for strength and healing for his marriage. Ultimately, Melanie must choose whether she’ll check out completely, or allow her characters to lead her home.

Goodreads description--The last thing Vaughan Hewson expects to find when he returns to his childhood home is a broken hearted bride in his shower, let alone the drama and chaos that comes with her.

Lydia Green doesn't know whether to burn down the church or sit and cry in a corner. Discovering the love of your life is having an affair on your wedding day is bad enough. Finding out it's with his best man is another thing all together. She narrowly escapes tying the knot and meets Vaughan only hours later.

Vaughan is the exact opposite of the picture perfect, respected businessman she thought she'd marry. This former musician-turned-bartender is rough around the edges and unsettled. But she already tried Mr. Right and discovered he's all wrong-maybe it's time to give Mr. Right Now a chance.

After all, what's wrong with getting dirty?

That's it for my shelves and recaps of my past and upcoming week. What did you add to your shelves this week? Any bookish news you want to talk about? Let me know!

  1. Oh, I can't wait to take my boys to the zoo - hopefully this spring or summer! My two-year-old loves animals and will go nuts! Gosh, I love the Grisha SO much - I hope you enjoy Ruin and Rising - it's a great end to the series! I also want to read The Glittering Court and Lady Midnight; I think I'm going to listen to LM on audio. I had no clue that Richelle Mead has the Dark Swan series! I still need to read Vampire Academy! LOL! Happy reading and have a fabulous week! :D

  6. That's awesome that you got 2 books down for TBR, and in a short week! And I wish I lived closer to the Zoo. I love going there and I think it would be so nice to just pop in and walk around every now and then. Our Detroit Zoo I respect b/c they actually got rid of their elephants because of the captivity issue on elephants. I can totally respect and love that :)

Have a great week!! And Happy 6 YEARS!!!!! WOOT!!!!!!!

  9. I loved going to the zoo when I was a kid. I'm glad your daughter had such a fun time.

I haven't seen Before I Fall yet though I am curious to see how it compares to the book. I hope you get to see it soon.

I have been thinking of joining the Take Control of Your TBR Challenge. I certainly have a lot of books on my TBR pile. Good luck with it!

  10. I hope you get to go to the zoo soon (if you haven't already). I still haven't read Ruin and Rising yet. Vampire Academy is one of my all-time favorite YA series. I hope you love it. Press on until book 3 if you aren't hooked with books 1 and 2. I know that's a lot to ask for, but book 3 changes everything. I had to put down The Glittering Court at 35% because I didn't enjoy the direction that it was headed, but I plan to try to finish it at some point. Thanks for stopping by Maggie! I'm sorry I'm so far behind on responding to comments!

  11. Aw...that's funny. I've never seen a kid so excited about a rhino before. She talked about him for weeks after we went. Thanks for commenting Grace!

  12. I've only ever been to the Montgomery Zoo (our local one) and the Denver Zoo when I was like 2 I think so I really don't remember that one. I'm with you...I always seem to have ARCs that I'm behind on. Thanks for stopping by Aleen! I'm sorry I'm so far behind on responding to comments!

  14. Yes, it is nice that we have a zoo so close by. It's relatively small, but we don't mind. Thanks for stopping by and commenting Kristin! I'm sorry I'm so far behind on responding to comments!

  15. Thanks Alyssa! I can't believe it has been 6 years already. Thanks for commenting so regularly! I'm sorry I'm so far behind on responding to comments!

  16. Me too! It wasn't something we did often (maybe once a year), so it always felt like a treat. I didn't review Before I Fall (the movie), but I remember some differences. In the end I had the same feeling with the movie as I did with the book--great message, but I didn't particularly like the characters. Thanks for stopping by Christina! I'm sorry I'm so far behind on responding to comments!
