Top Ten Books I Struggled to Get Into But Ended Up Loving

Top 10 Tuesday is a post hosted by The Broke and the Bookish and this week's topic is Top Ten Books I Struggled to Get Into But Ended Up Loving.

  1. PS I Like You by Kasie West (review coming soon) - Took about 20% for me to be hooked.
  2. A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns and Roses, # 1) by Sarah J Maas (review coming soon) - Hooked after 30%.
  3. Red Rising (Red Rising, # 1) by Pierce Brown - Took me 30% to get into the story, but I was blown away by this book and this series before it was over.
  4. Forbidden (Forbidden, # 1) by Kimberley Griffiths Little - Took 20%.
  5. A Dance with Dragons (A Song of Ice and Fire, # 5) by George R R Martin - Okay, let's be honest, George R R Martin's books always start out slow. They never seem to pick up right where you left off as he usually introduces an entirely new character. And with over 1000 pages it's hard for this to feel like a "fast" read.
  6. Game (Jasper Dent, # 2) by Barry Lyga - Definitely my least favorite book in this series, but oh so necessary for the entire storyline.
  7. Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver - I hated these characters in the beginning of this book.
  8. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson 0 Definitely a complicated read with a super slow start. I think I remember it took me about 150 pages to get into this. But super brilliant in the end.
  9. These Broken Stars (Starbound, # 1) by Aimee Kaufman & Meagan Spooner - I don't remember if it was really the book's fault, but I did have to put this one down a lot in the beginning.
  10. Code Name Verity (Code Name Verity, # 1) by Elizabeth Wein - I don't think it took me until 50% to be hooked, but I feel like I was at 50% before I really realized what was going on.

Which books took you a while to get into but you ended up loving? Let me know!

  1. I actually enjoyed a lot of these books. I agree, George RR Martin's books always seem a bit slow. They are definitely a commitment!

  2. I totally forgot about The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo!! It was SO SLOW at the start. But definitely got good after I pushed through. Game was actually my fave book in the Jasper Dent series. I loved the Hat-Dog mystery and how all the storylines came together-- I just wished Connie didn't become an idiot in that book. She was so cool in the first book & then ?????

  3. I'd really like to read the Song of Ice and fire books, but their size is very intimidating. Here is my Top Ten Tuesday.

  4. Yes to Code Name Verity! I had that exact same experience with it. I didn't love it and was really bored and a little confused for the first bit. And then one night as I was reading, I suddenly realized I was totally captivated and I loved it after that. I even made me cry near the end.

  5. I'm glad to see this list because almost all of these are on my TBR so it's good to know they may not be immediate hooks. These Broken Stars looks gorgeous and so many people seem to love Red Rising. Great list!

  6. Code Name Verity I struggled with and ending up loving, ACOTAR I struggled with and only really enjoyed the last 30% (loved the second book though) and Before I Fall, couldn't make it past page 50!

  8. I try to finish every book I start because the ending could make it all worth it. You have some good ones listed, the only one I have read is The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

  10. I still like Connie, but she did make some stupid decisions in Game that got her into a mess. Thanks for stopping by and commenting Michelle!

  11. The series is definitely an undertaking, and considering they can be rather slow I understand putting them off. They're so packed though and even some of the smallest details end up being hugely important so you can't skip anything either. Thanks for stopping by Poinsettia!

  13. Oh yes! Sometimes it can be frustrating to have heard a ton of hype around a book but then it takes you a while to get invested. I hope you get to read some of these. Especially Red Rising. It's one of my all time favorite series! Thanks for stopping by Katherine!

  15. I used to be that way, and sometimes I still wonder on those I've decided to DNF, but I've found some peace in being able to let them go when I'm not enjoying them. Thanks for stopping by Sherry!

  16. Yes! A Court of Mist and Fury was even better. I definitely understand not being able to get past Before I Fall. It ended up having a good message, but the characters were so unlikable. Thanks for stopping by Jo!
