Goodreads description--One grump. One thief. One highly-questionable adventure.

Leonard Stanton has perfected the art of being alone. He keeps to the edges of ballrooms, and society, whenever possible. But when a priceless family heirloom is stolen off his very person, he finds himself dragged into the one thing he hates most—a social entanglement.

Enter Miss Honora Gillingham. Vexingly cheerful, utterly unpredictable, and the last person Leonard should trust. Mostly because . . . she’s the one who stole from him.

Sigh, I'm a little sad about An Honorable Love. I can't say that I loved this book out of the A Gentleman's Gamble series. This series has been such a fun reading journey. I've seen independent historical fiction authors pile together to create these "series" where the characters or themes are connected, and each book is written by a different author. I think it's a great way to introduce readers of one author to similar authors they may be unfamiliar with. That certainly happened with me and this series. At the same time, I just didn't feel like An Honorable Love meshed with the other books in this series as much as I wanted it to.

Leonard is the last of his friends to marry. Or at least, he is unmarried at the start of this book. And that means that he has to pay the forfeit to the other friends for a total of six hundred pounds. He has the money, but his investments are tied up, and it isn't wise to pull them at this time. Yet he wants so badly to pay off his friends that he's willing to sell his great-grandmother's ring to do so. Unfortunately, he gets pickpocketed by a woman.

Honora didn't grow up wealthy. As a matter of fact, her father was a thief. And she has no friends in her new life. Well, she has one, but that friend hasn't contacted her in a while. And now she's bored. She's tried conversing with her maid, but the maid is terrified of stepping outside of her duties. And so she sets her sights on Leonard because he's so fun to rile up. She didn't mean for them to have any repeat interactions after pocketing his great-grandmother's ring. But the man did manage to track her down. Honora uses Leonard in a series of quests to complete a final task and put her thieving days behind her once and for all. Only these two are catching feelings.

Honora's past and entanglements make this book feel almost like a mystery, yet the mystery element is lacking. The only real mystery is the truth behind her past. But that isn't revealed in some big climax, but over a series of slow drips of information for both the reader and Leonard. I could feel the attraction between the two of them, but to get all the way to love felt like a stretch.

In a similar way, it was like Leonard was so against marriage and tying anyone to his father and his family, yet that didn't turn out to be any big obstacle in the end, and his father didn't even seem like an unreasonable man either. It was almost like he was made out to be some big villain, even potentially abusive to his son, yet none of that ended up coming out. I wasn't disappointed to find out that he was a decent person, but it felt a little bit anticlimatic.

In the end, An Honorable Love was probably my least favorite in the The Gentleman's Gamble series. I've decided to give it 3 Stars. I almost thought Thomas was going to show up in the end single after starting the whole thing, considering we never met him in person aside from the prologue of all of the books. That would have been something. Have you read An Honorable Love? What did you think? Let me know!

Goodreads description--The bet was simple. The plan was perfect. The result was bewildering.
To win a high-stakes wager, Ambrose Hartley must find a wife, preferably one who will help secure his ideal future. Hardened by past disappointment, he is avoiding fickle emotions by focusing on a logical list of requirements. His plans include a serious courtship, a suitable partner, and a predictable life.

Susanna Fenton is unpredictable, unsuitable, and rarely serious. A contented spinster, she believes love is the only proper reason to surrender her freedom. Having known Ambrose since childhood, she doesn’t hesitate to mock his plan. But as she watches him court eligible ladies, she begins to wonder if what she feels isn’t sisterly concern but jealousy.

As Ambrose’s plan unravels, Susanna worries that she will never measure up to his impossible standards. With their mutual misunderstandings mounting and six hundred pounds on the line, can they find the courage to risk their hearts for a future they never thought to plan?

***The Gentlemen's Gamble is a series about seven men racing to the altar in order to avoid losing a wager. Starting January, the books will release in an unannounced order to keep the loser of the wager a surprise.

Somehow I skipped writing my review for A Bewildered Bachelor upon completing this book. That being said...I finished this book three months before sitting down to write my review of it, once I realized that I never did. And I remember nearly nothing about this book. Also, I didn't highlight anything in my Kindle for notes, impressions, or quotes I wanted to refer back to. I did list it in my spreadsheet when I finished the book with a 4 Star rating. Thank goodness for that. I have racked my brain trying to remember a single thing about this book, but everything I thought I remembered was actually about a different book in this series. I don't think that's a fault of the book, but my fault for not reviewing it promptly. I do remember that it wasn't my least favorite book in this series. I actually did write a timely review of that book, and it will be coming. Maybe I should re-read this book so I can write a proper review. This is probably the worst book review I've published on my blog since I had zero to say about Harry Potter when I was originally listening to those on audiobook back in 2011.

A Novel Engagement - Review

A Novel Engagement (The Gentlemen's Gamble, # ?)

By: Anneka R Walker

Expected Publication: March 19, 2026 by Anneka R. Walker

238 pages

Genre: Adult, Historical Fiction

Goodreads description--A reckless wager. A forgotten promise. Two enemies in a race to the altar.

With an arranged marriage looming, Rowan Ashworth and Arabella Delafield cannot get past their vexing history—or their growing attraction. He has a vow to keep, and she’s determined to wed anyone but him. Old hurts, mistaken identities, and surprise chemistry turn a childhood promise into a second chance neither expected—and a love neither can outrun.

***The Gentlemen's Gamble is a series about seven men racing to the altar in order to avoid losing a wager. Starting January, the books will release in surprise order so as not to give away who the final bachelor and loser of the wager is.

Rowan and Arabella have been arranged to marry since they were little. The story goes that Arabella and family arrived at Rowan's family's house for a house party in tears. Two-year-old Rowan asked to hold baby Arabella, and she settled. At the entire house party, whenever Arabella would get upset, they would jokingly call in Master Amrbose to calm her down, and it worked every time. And thus they were promised to each other. However, being told you're going to marry someone from the time you're little doesn't always sit right, and Arabella and Rowan began to resent and tease each other. Rowan's mother dies while he is still young, and his grief plays a part in his treatment of Arabella. Also, he and his friends ridicule Arabella's writing and break her heart in the process, as writing has become her favorite pastime and way of dealing with life. Yet after the wager between his friends, Rowan has finally decided it is time to do his duty and marry Arabella afterall.

Arabella knows that Rowan is coming to force her hand since he's written to her father. She travels to visit her sister and concocts a plan to find someone else to marry in the meantime. She does settle on her sister's husband's cousin. She hopes that marrying him will allow her to live a quiet life where she will continue to write undeterred. But there are a couple of issues with Mr. Clodwick, one he's not Rowan. Two, Arabella isn't attracted to him at all and can only stand close proximity to him in small doses, and three, he believes in ghosts and thinks they not only haunt his house but also follow him around.

Rowan and Arabella have a lot of history that has caused a lot of tension. They behave with each other in a way that they wouldn't behave towards anyone else. Yet they also have a sweet history that needs to be remembered and brought back to the surface.

Favorite quotes:

-"You're a liar Arabella Delafield. You're more drawn to me than you dare admit. So fight all you want, but in the end, we both know I'm the only one for you."

-The more she tried to push me away, the more she ensnared my interest.

A Novel Engagement is probably my second favorite of this series. And I'm not going to quite say that Anneka R Walker is a better author than the other ladies writing this series, but I will say that I noted her writing style and felt it was more polished and to my tastes, even if I plan to seek out more books by the other authors of this series as well. Anneka R Walker has become an auto-read author for me, and A Novel Engagement reinforced exactly why. A Novel Engagement gets 4 Stars. Have you read A Novel Engagement? What did you think? Let me know!

A Founding Mother - Review

A Founding Mother: A Novel of Abigail Adams – A Historical Novel of the Woman Who Helped Shape America from the Shadows

Narrated By: Cassandra Campbell

Publication: May 5, 2026 by William Morrow Paperbacks

464 pages

Genre: Adult, Historical Fiction, American Revolution

Goodreads description--In time for the 250th Anniversary of the birth of the United States comes a sweeping, intimate portrayal of Abigail Adams—wife of one president and mother to another—whose wit, willpower, and wisdom helped shape the fledgling republic. A stunning historical novel with modern-day implications from the New York Times bestselling authors of America’s First Daughter and My Dear Hamilton.

In the heart of revolutionary Boston, Abigail Adams raises her children amid riots, blockades, and the outbreak of war. While her husband, John Adams, rises from country lawyer to nation-builder, often away for years at a time, Abigail builds her own independence—managing their farm, making lucrative investments, amassing savings, battling plague and loss, and defending their home. Unafraid to speak her mind, she famously offers fearless political counsel, urging John to “remember the ladies” in the new government. Through it all, she becomes his most trusted confidante and indispensable ally.

When peace is secured, Abigail steps onto the world stage—exchanging ideas with Thomas Jefferson in the French countryside, navigating court life as the wife of the Minister to Great Britain, and presiding over the parlor politics of the early American republic in New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC. Even after her husband’s presidential administration, she continues battling political foes and working behind the scenes to advance her family, secure independence for the women in her life, and ensure a better life for the next generation of Americans.

From war-torn streets to the chandeliered halls of power, A Founding Mother is the unforgettable story of a woman ahead of her time—one whose voice, vision, and valor still resonate powerfully today.

Given the United States of America is set to turn 250 years old this July 4th, I saw A Founding Mother for review and knew I wanted to check it out. I requested the audio version because I knew I would get through it quicker that way. And man, was that the right choice! Cassandra Campbell does a wonderful job narrating the audio version.

I've got to be honest. I didn't know too much about John or Abigail Adams. Neither was a big part of my American History education throughout school, and after listening to this audiobook, I feel like that's probably a disservice to myself and to the Adams family and their service to the country.

I do find history fascinating. When you look at it through the lens of just being a collection of stories about individual people, then I find it much easier to learn about. I will say that I cried at least three times while listening to this book. I don't think that has ever happened to me while reading (or listening to) a book before. Part of that is the story, but also, as I mention, Cassandra Campbell does a wonderful job bringing this story to life. Stephanie Dray & Laura Kamoie's writing. All of it merging into a wonderful conglomeration.

Of course, when you're reading a book that isn't dual or multiple perspectives, you are just getting one person's point of view. So it's easier to sympathize with what a person is going through and to see that person as being the "good guy" and the people that oppose them as "bad guys". That isn't the correct lens to look at the world, though. Things are rarely black and white. And the people who might have worked against the Adams family have their own versions of events. I have come out of this story having learned a lot while also having a desire to learn more. And that's one of the best recommendations that I can give it.

It amazes me how much things haven't changed in our world. How, from the formation of America, the news has been printing lies, scandals, stirring the pot, and trying to take down the opposite political viewpoint. Today we often think of the biased news media as being a new thing. It's talked about so frequently that it's easy to see. But this has been happening since the beginning. It's also easy for us to think that the Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4, 1776, and the country was unified and everyone was happy and working together to create this great nation. Without proper education on how truly difficult our forefathers fought to create our nation, it's so easy to forget what all the people who lived and died fought for. It seems like American History must hardly be taught, and what is taught is skewed.

For instance, I know that slavery is such a talked-about thing concerning America's foundation. And a lot of our founding fathers even owned slaves, but then when you look deeper, you learn that some of our founders opposed slavery from the beginning. Abigail was strongly against it, and her work for women's rights is something that could easily be forgotten because progress wasn't exactly made in her lifetime.

A Founding Mother was a deeply moving story about a woman whom I came to respect. My heart broke for her throughout the story, yet Abigail was a strong woman who stood through many heartbreaking times. She had a strong understanding of politics and helped her husband often throughout his political career. She was also a brilliant businesswoman, taking control of their family's finances nearly on her own while John was overseas and even after, to the point where John didn't concern himself with finances and he didn't even know how Abigail actually made money for their family. It's mind-blowing what she accomplished in a time when women weren't given the freedoms that we have today. The story itself is engaging enough for me to recommend it to my readers. I was never bored while listening to it.

Yet if you have a particular fondness or interest in history, I cannot recommend this book to you enough. A Founding Mother easily gets 5 Stars from me. As a matter of fact, A Founding Mother is the first book I've given 5 Stars to in 2026. Have you read or listened to A Founding Mother? What did you think? Let me know!

A Foolish Proposal - Review

A Foolish Proposal (The Gentlemen's Gamble, # ?)

Publication: February 5, 2026 by Golden Owl Press

Genre: Adult, Historical Fiction

Goodreads description--One careless remark. One outrageous proposal. One Season to discover love where they least expect it.

Caroline Whitby needs a husband. Unfortunately, her charmingly infuriating neighbor Tristan Shepherd just ruined her best prospect—and then had the audacity to propose himself. If only she didn’t despise him and his insufferably flirtatious grin.

***The Gentlemen's Gamble is a series about seven men racing to the altar in order to avoid losing a wager. Starting January, the books will release in surprise order so as not to give away who the final bachelor and loser of the wager is.

Tristan and six of his friends (including his twin brother) are on the way home from their Grand Tour when their boat is caught in a storm that the friends think will result in their deaths. Spurred on by the seriousness of the situation, the friends make a gamble about which will be the last friend to get married. The last unwed bachelor ends up paying all of the others 100 pounds each. The friends returned safely, and the wager is forgotten, until one friend sends letters around to all of the others that he has successfully married and is expecting his winnings. Since then, two others have also gotten married.

Tristan needs to marry well to secure his future. His older brother is the heir to their family estate, so he can't depend on that for his income. So he's decided that it's about time to start looking. Only shortly into his search, he unintentionally ruins the marriage prospects of Caroline Whitby, who was a neighbor growing up. He knows her well and commented on her dislike of horses, which the man she was hoping would offer for her loves to the point of talking about them all the time. That man feels like he's been lied to and takes a step back from courting Caroline. Unfortunately, Caroline has to marry for money also. Their family has been economizing after her father made some bad investments. So, despite Tristan stepping up to try to fix the mistake he made by ruining her marriage prospect, he just doesn't fit the bill. Caroline does agree to allow Tristan to help her recover her lost suitor. And she will help Tristan look for a suitable wife. The only trouble is, Caroline's crush on Tristan from when they were kids isn't quite as vanquished as she hoped.

Favorite quotes:

-"When I am that lonely, do not allow me to find companionship by meddling, Caro. I am relying on you to keep me properly occupied."

-"I had not intended to renew a proposal so abhorrent to you."

A Jane Austen reference if ever I heard one.

-he rather wondered if she liked toads more than she had led him to believe.

-"Will you marry me, Caroline? Even though I am not a toad?"

-"My love is not transactional."

Tristan and Caroline's story hasn't been my favorite so far. That belongs to Tristan's twin brother, Charles & Marie. But I still blew through this book. I haven't read anything by Kasey Stockton yet, and as these series with multiple authors are designed to, I certainly will be seeking out more of her books in the future. A Foolish Proposal gets 4 Stars. Have you read A Foolish Proposal? What did you think? Let me know!

Goodreads description--He expected a quick visit. He left with a wife instead.

He expected a quick visit. He left with a wife instead.

Charles Shepherd is in no rush to marry. With good looks, a comfortable fortune, and considerable charm, he’s certain love will find him eventually. Unfortunately, his mother has other plans.

Returning home for a short visit, Charles reluctantly agrees to meet Miss Marie Oakley—a woman as fortunate as he in both looks and manners. What is meant to be a simple introduction, however, ends in a sudden marriage, and Charles, who values his freedom above all else, is livid.

Mercifully, Marie is as uninterested in the marriage as he is. After a disastrous first day together, they strike a mutual bargain: do whatever it takes to end the marriage as quickly as possible. Charles is determined to reclaim his independence and find love on his own terms. But as forced proximity turns into reluctant understanding, he must face an unsettling possibility—what if the woman he’s trying to leave is the very one he can’t live without?

***The Gentlemen's Gamble is a series about seven men racing to the altar in order to avoid losing a wager. Starting January, the books will release in surprise order so as not to give away who the final bachelor and loser of the wager is.***

Now this was a fun book to read! I've never read Deborah M Hathaway before, but I definitely will now.

Charles and his 6 friends (including his twin brother) made a wager in the heat of a moment several years ago when they all thought they might very well die. Charles's friend Thomas has written to let the group know that he has now married and is ready to collect on their wager. The last gentleman to marry will owe the other six 100 pounds each. Not to mention that Charles's other friend, Andrew, is now married too. Meaning, two down and five to go. To make matters worse, Charles's mother is constantly trying to marry him off. She has been writing him for about two years about marrying a neighbor, Marie Oakley. Charles responds to his mother in letter form, dripping in sarcasm. The trouble is: sarcasm is hard to detect in written form, particularly if the reader is unfamiliar with the author.

Marie has no intentions of trapping anyone in a marriage. It's simply that she is of an age where suitors are less and less likely. She believes that Charles has decided to enter into a marriage of convenience willingly. She doesn't know that his mother has tricked him. And now her reputation may be on the line. At least before, marriage to someone else was possible. But now, her reputation likely won't survive being spurned. Marie feels she has no choice but to proceed. Yet she is willing to annul the marriage if that is what Charles wants.

These two go on their honeymoon to a secluded cottage. They do have servants with them, but even I knew there would be no way to annul the marriage without Marie's reputation suffering from it. Yet they find that maybe they don't want to annul the marriage afterall.

I tell you. I enjoyed this book much more than I was expecting to. And it's possible that this might end up being my favorite of the series, even though we are only two books in.

Favorite quotes:

-“Actions reveal far more.” “Cannot actions be feigned, as well?” he countered. “Not for long. In the end, a person always reveals who he or she is on the inside by their actions.”

-“Sooner or later,” she replied, “as the night wears on and propriety and politeness wane, the drink becomes stronger and the tired eyes become weaker, a person reveals his true character. How he treats others during those late hours is very telling.”

-“Why would I ever reveal to you who I truly am if you are simply to reject that version of me, too?”

-Childish Charlie had met his match in Immovable Marie.

The banter was fun. The fountain scene was delicious. And I just thoroughly enjoyed this entire book. An Accidental Marriage gets 4.5 Stars. I can't wait to continue the series, as well as delve deeper into Deborah M Hathaway's other books. Have you read An Accidental Marriage? What did you think? Let me know!

Goodreads description--A spirited Victorian beauty with a fondness for fairytales unwittingly falls under the power of a beastly, scandal-plagued nobleman in the first book in USA Today bestselling author Mimi Matthews’s new Daughters of Somerset series.

Charlotte Beresford has spent far too long under the iron rule of strict governesses and unflinching finishing school teachers. When she’s offered a brief window of freedom—an invitation to spend the summer with a recent acquaintance in a remote corner of Yorkshire, far from societal expectations—she jumps at the chance. Never mind that her new friend is odd, their chaperone questionable, and the village rumored to be cursed. Charlotte knows how to look after herself. Battle-scarred and bad tempered, Magnus Sterling never intended to return to England, let alone Yorkshire. Indeed, they don’t even need to know that the infamous son of the equally infamous Earl of Eversleigh is back on British soil. Magnus will keep to himself, and to the crumbling manor house, and for once in his miserable life avoid any cloud of scandal. A straightforward enough plan, or so he believes, until he catches sight of the bold, auburn-haired intruder infiltrating the grounds of his estate…

A Fortunate Miscalculation - Review

A Fortunate Miscalculation (The Gentlemen's Gamble, # ?)

By: Karen Thornell

Expected Publication: March 19, 2026

252 pages

Genre: Adult, Historical Fiction

( Goodreads | Amazon )

*Note: The above link to Amazon is an affiliate links. Affiliate links support giveaways for Somewhere Only We Know readers.

Goodreads description--A wager. An inconvenient love. A fortunate miscalculation that changes everything.

Andrew Langford is an honorable man. So it is deeply inconvenient when Sophie Renard, the woman he loved, appears at his door on the very day he’s reminded of a youthful wager that will cost the last unwed man a small fortune. She is beautiful, desperate, and, Andrew believes, married.

Sophie came to London for a prestigious mathematics position that she’s worked toward for six years. But after the promised job is withdrawn, she faces humiliating failure unless she can persuade her employer to reconsider. With no one else to turn to, she seeks help from her old friend, Andrew.

Andrew offers assistance where he can, determined to be nothing more than a friend. But proximity rekindles old feelings neither of them can afford, and Sophie’s charm and brilliance remind him why he once fell for her. As secrets unravel and the future threatens to pull them apart for a second time, they both must decide what they are willing to risk for love.

Andrew and six of his friends are on the way home from their Grand Tour when their boat is caught in a storm that the friends think will result in their deaths. Spurred on by the seriousness of the situation, the friends make a gamble about which will be the last friend to get married. Honestly, I got a little confused by the details of the wager. Do all the friends pay each time one of the other gets married until the last? Or does only the last unwed bachelor end up paying all of the others? I suppose it pans out in the end. The friends returned safely, and the wager is forgotten, until one friend sends letters around to all of the others that he has successfully married and he is expecting his winnings.

Andrew had full intentions of coming home and proclaiming his suit to his neighbor and friend, Sophie. He'd been in love with her half his life anyway. But when he finally returns, he is told that she's already married. Dejected, he returns to London to go about setting up his career. As a second son, he can't depend on a living being provided for him. He has an uncle who taught him about banking, and he has dreams of purchasing (or renting) his own estate and setting up his own bank in the future. He never expected Sophie to show up to his door in London alone one night.

Sophie hasn't exactly cut her parents off, but she left home to take care of her ailing grandfather. While in Bristol, she tutored under a brillant mathmetician. She then taught at a girls' school, but her dream is of making a name for herself in the world so that he parents will see her love for mathematics to be worthwhile, and thus her person as well. Except, the position she was offered was offered to her under the assumption that she was male. Rejected, she has nowhere to turn late at night. She seeks out the family home of her nearby neighbors only to find Andrew alone in the house.

It isn't a great situation, but Andrew believes her to be married so he allows a married, family friend to stay for a short while. Only, Sophie's marital status isn't at all what Andrew believes it to be. The two end up in a marriage of convenience to save reputations and to allow Sophie a little leeway with the job she's seeking. Only, Andrew still has all the feelings for Sophie that he had growing up. But he's offered Sophie a marriage in name only.

Favorite quote:

-"I cannot wait until you're mired in love. I will be full of useful advice like 'just propose, what could go wrong?'"

The only other quote I highlighted was a reference to the last friend who has fallen victim to love. See, the A Gentleman's Gamble series has a unique premise. The authors all took a friend. There are six books in all and seven friends total. For the loser of the wager not to be spoiled for the reader, the order of the books has not been revealed. And the reader doesn't know which book will release next.

A Fortunate Miscalculation was an enjoyable read for me. I appreciate forced marriages and marriages of convenience. Andrew & Sophie had a sweet story. I can already tell you it isn't my favorite of the series, but that's okay. A Fortunate Miscalcuation still gets 4 Stars. Have you read A Fortunate Miscalculation? What did you think? Let me know!

Goodreads description--When both attempt to flee their past, can love’s pursuit catch them?

Estelle Lowry has traded her privileged life for anonymity, running away to become Miss Estelle Lewis—governess and companion. But her carefully laid plans unravel when she discovers a man beaten and left for dead. Defying every rule of propriety, she rescues him, bringing him to safety. A connection sparks between the two strangers, yet his injuries keep his face obscured. Before he fully recovers, she is forced to leave in search of employment—without a name, a past, or any way to find him again.

Six months later, Estelle arrives at Rosemont Manor, determined to guard her heart—and her secrets. But her resolve falters when she finds herself drawn to the last man she should want: the brooding and unpredictable Lord Camden.

Atlas Camden has no time for distractions. Due to his complicated past, he is determined to shoulder his responsibilities and keep his family safe. The arrival of his sister’s new companion sets him at odds with himself. Miss Lewis is as headstrong as she is captivating—and far too often at the center of trouble, drawing both his attention and concern. His mother would be scandalized if she knew he was even entertaining romantic notions about a woman in service, let alone one who is half-Irish. Besides, a man with his history has no right to offer his heart—and even less to hope for one in return.

When secrets are revealed and trust crumbles, running from their past is no longer an option. Estelle and Atlas must choose between the new paths they’ve forged or the broken history to which they are still bound.

The Stranger I Love is full of longing, redemption, and courageous love. It is the first book in The Runaway Brides series and is a clean Victorian romance without explicit content.

Goodreads description--Ruined by scandal, Georgiana bargains with a duke to regain her place in Society. But their pretend friendship sparks real love, risking reputations, duty, and unexpected happily-ever-afters.

Eight months after a stolen kiss ruined her reputation, Miss Georgiana Wood is a recluse, cast out of Society without any hope of ever finding a suitable match. Longing for redemption, she never expects her salvation to arrive in the form of a handsome, temperamental duke.

After a failed bargain left the Duke of Marlow without a promised wife and heir, he must face courtship a final time. He plans to entice his future bride with a priceless family heirloom—one now in the possession of Miss Wood, who agrees to return it if he takes her on three outings in London during the Season to restore her reputation.

As the pair navigate Society’s expectations and whispered gossip, Marlow soon sees a new side to Georgiana—an ally and friend. Her wit and courage, grace and allure far exceed that of the eligible ladies he intended to court, and soon, he’d do almost anything to secure her happiness.

As Marlow wrestles with duty and desire, Georgiana begins to hope that she could be loved not despite her past, but because of who she truly is. When hearts are tested, truth and secrets revealed, will love be enough to risk it all?

First, The Duke's Bargain should really be listed as book 3 in a series with the previous two books being: Lakeshire Park and Miss Newbury's List. Georgiana was a side character in Lakeshire Park. Her brother was the main male character of that book. And she and another woman were in competition at a house party for the hand of one man. Georgiana had known him since childhood and truly couldn't comprehend that he wasn't interested in her. She kisses him in a public way, and her reputation suffers because of it. But she hasn't given up. When the Duke of Marlow shows up at her house to retrieve an heirloom that his cousin lost to Georgiana's brother, Peter, during a bit of gambling, Georgiana knows that she has to capitalize on this opportunity.

Marlow was a side character in Miss Newbury's List. He was supposed to marry Rosalind in an arranged marriage beneficial to both of them. But Rosalind fell in love with another man during that time. Marlow still needs to find a wife and produce an heir. He agrees to Georgiana's request to escort her to three events, thereby giving her his blessing to all of society. But he didn't count on falling in love with her. Nor her with him.

I really enjoyed this romance. Marlow was so cold in Miss Newbury's List, yet I did remember feeling sorry for him. And I like that Georgiana was considered a villain in Lakeshire Park. It's all about perspective. I love being able to turn things around and see them from a different angle.

Favorite quotes:

-Loneliness was an ugly, bitter hag, and I was tired of her.

-"No man can measure up to a good book."

-"I don't aim to control you, Georgiana. I only aim to please you."

-"'Dear, dear! To see how some people fling away their happiness, and then cry and weep about it, just as if it was not their own doing, and as if there was more pleasure in weeping and wailing than in being at peace.'"

-"Ours is my very favorite story, Lucas."

I definitely feel like The Duke's Bargain should be listed as the third in a series. While you could read this book independently from the previous two books, I do feel like you'd be missing a lot about the characters' stories and background. How we got to where we are is so important to appreciate the full story. The Duke's Bargain gets 4 Stars. Have you read The Duke's Bargain? What did you think? Let me know!

A Deal with a Debutante - Review

Goodreads description--She’s running from London’s marriage mart. He’s running out of time to save his estate. Neither planned on falling in love—but their hearts have other plans.

American heiress Calliope Hart is thrust into London’s high society against her will, all because her mother is determined to marry her off to an aristocrat. Despite being named “the debutante of the season” back in New York, Calliope wants nothing more than to avoid becoming another pawn in the social game.

Edward Chase, the Earl of Hayward, is on the brink of financial ruin. To save his estate, he must marry, and Calliope Hart is his last hope. When he boldly declares his intentions, she swiftly rejects him, making it clear she has no interest in marrying for convenience. Undeterred, Edward offers a deal: He will escort Calliope to all the best sights of London that she’s been dying to see if she agrees to visit his estate and consider what they could accomplish together.

What begins as a business arrangement soon sparks something much more complicated—an undeniable chemistry neither can ignore. But as their hearts begin to soften, both must confront their fears: Can Calliope trust Edward with her heart, and can Edward truly win her love when she’s convinced he only wants her fortune?

Calliope is an American debutante from a "new rich" family. Her family has everything they need to move around the social structure of New York. Except that Calliope's mother wants to be invited into the Knickerbocker's club, and Calliope needs to hail from a well-known family or marry into one. Thus, her mother's desire for Calliope to marry an English aristocrat. Calliope, for her part, wants nothing more than to return to New York, where she can resume time spent with her friends as well as the work of writing articles she hopes to later compile into a book about historical sites. Calliope loved New York, but unlike another book I recently DNF'd where the character acted like every other place in the world could never compare with New York and therefore ridiculed those places, I appreciated that Calliope had a love for her home while also being able to see the beauty and history of other places.

Edward hoped that by being direct with Calliope on what he had to offer and what he hoped to gain in return, she would appreciate him. Unfortunately, he sounded a little too much like those who had mocked her and the other American debutantes who were in the marriage mart in England to snag titled husbands. Edward had to work to backtrack and prove himself. He made a deal to take Calliope to tour historical locations in London as well as show her his home estate, which needed her dowry to sustain it and the families dependant upon it for survival.

Calliope and Edward spend a lot of time together, but how can she ever trust the feelings building between them when he needs her for something? Those questions were exacerbated by a long-time friend who travels to England to ask Calliope for her hand in marriage, which offers her a chance to return to New York and her friends and family, as well as her work.

I will say that I don't usually love this period in history when it comes to novels. I can't remember seeing a specific date included, but the inclusion of the motorcar leads me to believe it's Edwardian. The rules of society are closely related to the Regency and Victorian, but more modern. I am no expert, but The Gilded Age is one I tend to steer clear of for various reasons. That being said, I wasn't too put off by the period, and I would consider reading other books in this series should there be more published.

I read A Deal with a Debutante quickly. It was easy to root for the characters, but I found myself skimming some passages of description that didn't always suit my reading preferences. I want to be so immersed in the story that I'm neither looking to skip ahead nor wanting to slow things down. I didn't quite feel like the pacing of A Deal with a Debutante was exactly right. Or maybe some extra stuff could have been trimmed a little. I'm giving A Deal with a Debutante 3.5 Stars. Have you read A Deal with a Debutante? What did you think? Let me know!

Goodreads description--Betrayed by her betrothed, she flees to a stranger. Haunted by his past, he offers salvation. Can two wounded souls find healing in each other?A wronged debutante and a disillusioned duke enter into a marriage of convenience—only to discover that trust, grace, and healing can grow even from the ashes of betrayal.

She needs to escape …
When Miss Annabel Ridley learns of her fiancé’s shocking betrayal, she knows she cannot proceed with the match—even if it means defying her father’s wishes and igniting scandal. Trapped between duty and danger, she flees to the one man powerful enough to help her—the Duke of Halmesbury, a stranger with a formidable reputation … and a surprising offer.

He needs to make amends …
Philip Markham, Duke of Halmesbury, has spent years hiding from heartache and mistakes he cannot undo. When a determined young woman arrives on his doorstep, desperate and brave, he sees an opportunity to do one thing right. He proposes a marriage of convenience to protect her—but as they draw closer, he finds himself yearning for more.

Can two hearts bound by necessity learn to love—and find peace in the providence neither dared to hope for?

As old wounds resurface and secrets come to light, Annabel and Philip must learn to trust one another—and to believe that sometimes, the most unexpected unions are those most touched by grace.

The Duke’s Sacred Vow is the moving first novel in the Brides of the Regency series by Isabel Jacobs. If you enjoy noble heroes, courageous heroines, and stories of romance woven with faith and emotional depth, then you will be captivated by this heartfelt tale of love, trust, and quiet redemption.

If I remember correctly, I got The Duke's Sacred Vow as a freebie. Sometimes, I don't expect a lot out of freebies, but I've been in the mood for historical fiction to get me out of my fantasy rut. So I decided to take a chance on The Duke's Sacred Vow, and I was pleasantly surprised.

Annabel is engaged to a man that she's known for a long time. They've been friends. Richard was a close friend of her brother's, but as she got older, Richard became a confidant for Annabel. She thinks they have a love match, but one day, Annabel stumbles upon Richard and her maid in the stables. After that, Annabel is determined to get out of the marriage. Yet Richard plans to move forward with the wedding, and Annabel's father won't hear of ending the engagement either. Annabel seeks out Richard's cousin who lives fairly close by in hopes that he will talk sense into Richard. He is heralded as an honorable man, and he is a duke. Well Annabel is surprised to find that Phillip's solution to her problem is to marry her himself.

Phillip is a widower. He needs to remarry to ensure his duty to produce and heir. Yet he dreads the idea of the marriage mart. And his previous marriage was a struggle between two ill-suited people. He doesn't want that. Annabel surprises him by showing up at his house. However, he is immediately impressed by her. He makes an impulsive offer, but it will solve two problems at once. He can rescue her from his roguish cousin, and he can secure himself a wife. They both know they wouldn't be marrying for love, but Annabel is satisfied with an honest marriage with mutual admiration.

The two do get married within a week of meeting each other. They both have pasts that need to be worked through. Phillip never really grieved his previous wife nor the falling apart of his relationship with his cousin which he has just made more complicated by stealing his cousin's bride. Annabel falls first and she isn't sure whether Phillip married her because he was trying to get revenge against his cousin. Plus she and her brother are estranged, and she has no idea why.

I was hooked into this story early. And I never had any complaints with the writing style or pacing. I will say that I was so impressed with the prayer life and personal relationships of Annabel and Phillip. I feel this is probably more of a reflection upon Isabel Jacobs (the author) than the characters themselves. The frequency that these characters spoke to God was so impressive. This is a situation where many might find it idealistic, but I find it inspiring. And I wish more literature showed the world as it could be rather than as it is. I will be reading more of her books just to see if this is as common with her other characters as it was with these two. But it helps to remind me to be as constantly in conversation with God throughout my day.

Favorite quotes:

-“You must pray over this, child. If the Lord opens a door, it’s ours to walk through, but you must be certain it’s not one you’ve forced open yourself.”

-God is so kind, she thought, pausing at the door. He does not always answer in the way we expect, but He never forgets us.

-“But I would rather stand before God having erred on the side of mercy than having hardened my heart.”

-“You see, the world turns something holy into something coarse. But Scripture speaks of marriage as a picture of Christ and the Church. Tender, patient, honoring. A true husband waits for his bride, honors her hesitations, and sees intimacy as a gift, not a demand.”

The Duke's Sacred Vow gets 4.5 Stars. It's one of my favorite tropes--marriages of convenience. I loved the personal relationship the two main characters had with God. My one critique is that Phillip nearly had to fight himself to figure out that he loved Annabel, yet he pulls the "I've loved you since the first day" thing. If not for that, I might have given this one 5 Stars. Have you read The Duke's Sacred Vow? What did you think? Let me know!

A Love Most Daring - Review

A Love Most Daring (Bow Street, # 3)

By: Joanna Barker

Expected Publication: March 3, 2026 by Shadow Mountain

320 pages

Genre: Adult, Historical Fiction, Regency

Source: Publisher via NetGalley (Thank you!!)

( Goodreads | Amazon )

*Note: The above link to Amazon is an affiliate links. Affiliate links support giveaways for Somewhere Only We Know readers.

Goodreads description--From best-selling author Joanna Barker: Proper romance meets page-turning mystery in this captivating tale of danger, redemption, and love worth fighting for.

After years of whispered gossip and quiet exile in the countryside, Beatrice Lacey arrives in London determined to reclaim her life. But her resolve is shaken when she witnesses a horrific attack tied to a chilling high-profile murder case gripping the city.

Thrust into sudden danger, Beatrice finds herself under the reluctant protection of Alexander Rawlings—a brooding Bow Street officer with a guarded heart and a fierce sense of duty. Though it's clear he’d rather be chasing the killer than shielding a scandal-stained Society miss, their forced closeness begins to unravel his defenses. In the unnerving moments between danger and discovery, every sharp exchange and lingering glance fans a slow-burning connection—one neither of them expected and neither can resist.

With danger closing in and old wounds resurfacing, trust may be their only refuge—and love their most daring risk of all.

A Love Most Daring should really be listed as the third in a series IMO. A Heart Worth Stealing would be book 1. Then So True a Love would be book 2. This book wasn't listed as third in the series at the time of writing this review, but strangely enough the previous two books I just mentioned weren't listed in a series either until I just looked and they are now listed in the Bow Street series. The first book being about Ginny & Jack. The second book is about Verity, Jack's sister, and Nathaniel. And now this book, A Love Most Daring is about Ginny's best friend, Beatrice, and a fellow Bow Street Runner, Alexander.

Beatrice is in London visiting Ginny & Jack. Ginny has been trying to matchmake her with a different Bow Street Runner, Mr. Drake. Yet Beatrice has been involved in a slight scandal in the past. She stumbled upon a lady of the ton in a compromising situation with a man, but instead of that lady's reputation being ruined, she spread rumors about Beatrice instead. She's spent two years at home, but she's been lonely, and she hopes the gossip will have died down. Unfortunately, once Rawlings realizes that Beatrice has her sights set on his friend Drake, he begins asking around about her, which doesn't give him a favorable opinion of her. He behaves rather rudely towards Beatrice and thwarts one of her and Ginny's attempts to spend time with Mr. Drake. Rawlings gets trapped into the outing instead.

During this outing, a criminal attempts to stab Rawlings for his part in investigating a murder. And Beatrice both saves his life and sees the attacker's face. Rawlings and Beatrice go into hiding while the other Bow Street Runners take over the murder investigation. Alexander and Beatrice end up going to his estate where his mother has been living. His mother has been trying to get him to end his Bow Street career and come home to run his estate--something Alexander hasn't been interested in at all. If Alexander was rough upon his first meeting Beatrice, his mother is doubly hard on her. I even teared up one time with all that Beatrice had upon her shoulders.

Beatrice and Alexander's slow-building relationship was so enjoyable and just the change in genre I needed to get away from some of the fantasy I've been reading lately.

I only highlighted twice.

-The man really should just smile and get it over with before his face cracked right down the middle from the stress of holding it back.

-There is little point in begging you not to be angry with me, so I shall only ask that you do not do anything foolish while angry. Such decisions are never well made.

A Love Most Daring was really enjoyable. And often, I find that books that have a romance and a mystery can be troublesome for me when the mystery takes over the romance. That didn't happen in A Love Most Daring at all. And I appreciate that. Joanna Barker has really become an auto-buy author for me. And I look forward to Mr. Drake potentially getting his happily-ever-after afterall. A Love Most Daring gets 4 Stars. Have you read A Love Most Daring? What did you think? Let me know!

The Proposition of the Season - Review

The Proposition of the Season (Fairfax Sisters, # 3)

By: Michelle Kenney

Publication: February 6, 2026 by One More Chapter

285 pages

Genre: Adult, Historical Fiction

Source: Publisher via NetGalley (Thank you!!)

( Goodreads | Amazon )

Goodreads description--'How I love a story of sisters, and Michelle Kenney has conjured up four sparky modern-minded Fairfax girls. The dialogue is quick-fire, plot complex and satisfying, the men heroic and rich' Jane Dunn, Sunday Times bestselling author Perfect for Bridgerton and Jane Austen fans! Fall in love with your favourite new Regency series, with this third installment from the Fairfax family…

‘And you’ve come here today to read me a lecture in all my deplorable habits?’

‘No…’ she stalled, wracking her brain for inspiration and failing, ‘I’ve come here to ask you to marry me!’

After three disastrous seasons, bookish Josephine Fairfax believes that she is long past the age of finding her perfect fictional hero. But when her brother’s loathsome Monstrous Marriage Masterplan results in her youngest sister Matilda’s engagement to the vastly unsuitable Lord Huntingly, even she must draw the line.

Josephine may be the bluestocking sister, but she is still a Fairfax who will sacrifice anything for family, even proposing marriage to a man who may be the most dangerous gentleman in the ton…

Each book in the Fairfax Sisters series can be read as a standalone.

The Proposition of the Season started out a little slow for me. It wasn't long before the main character was writing in her journal to a fictional character, Fitzwilliam (Darcy one would presume since she loves Jane Austen). I just find this a little juvenile. Obviously, writing in a journal is one thing. And the point was to show how deeply affected Josephine is by the fictional stories that she's read and what she is looking for in a match. But I felt it was a little unrealistic given her age. Just a little annoyance.

I haven't read the previous books in this series. The previous two have featured Josephine's older sisters, Sophie and Phoebe. So I did feel like I was missing a little information. But what's most important to know is that Josephine's oldest brother, Sir Thomas, is determined to marry his sisters off as quickly as possible. He seems to be only concerned with money, even though the estate was never mentioned to be struggling exactly. He just seems to be obsessed with how much money his sisters are costing him and how he can't wait to marry them off. Even going so far as to engage their youngest sister, Matilda, to a man whose reputation has been damaged by scandal--scandal that paints him as a potential murderer.

Josephine is so determined to rescue her younger sister from this fate, that she reaches out to Lord Huntingly to offer herself as an alternative to Matilda since it is the family name he is seeking in the match. Huntingly is so awed by Josephine that he agrees. Josephine then spends the rest of the book bouncing back and forth between being drawn to Huntingly and being scared she's going to be married to a murderer.

Instead of asking him any direct questions, she makes assumptions and then spends a large amount of time going behind his back to ask all kinds of questions from everyone but him. I mean sure he might not be truthful with her, but at least ask the man what he knows and what happened before judging him one way or the other. Sheesh. I get that this is part of the period culture. People rarely spoke directly it seems.

In the meantime, Josephine has somewhat idealized her brother Fred's friend, Sir Francis. He is well read and seems to value Josephine's mind despite many considering her a spinster bluestocking. Yet he hasn't made any offers or any indication that he thinks of her beyond his friend's sister. We do come to learn more about Sir Francis. **Highlight for spoiler: I do wish he hadn't been involved in the situation with Huntingly's father and Eliza. I felt that was a little too on the nose. Having him be a rogue and womanizer was enough in my book. I didn't feel like him being connected to the downfall of Huntingly himself was necessary. End spoiler.

Also, I was annoyed with Fred. Why did he have be included in the admiration that everyone apparently feels for Sir Francis? Things were subtle which I do appreciate, but I'm also so sick of this being pushed on us in nearly every book. And I often choose historical regency fiction so that I can avoid this topic.

I'm unsure whether I will continue this series. I'm vaguely interested in Matilda's story. She is a bit of a wild child so her story could go in so many directions. And I do wonder if the series will eventually follow any of the brothers. I would obviously skip Fred's if he's ever given one. But it is called "Fairfax Sisters," so likely not.

Favorite quote:

-"I trust the flavour is to your liking, sir?" ..."Indeed," he replied, taking a drink with dancing eyes, "the flavour is very much to my liking. A small wedding, no objection to restoration work, and a skilled hostess--you are in danger of making me like the flavour a great deal, Miss Fairfax."

All of that being said, once I got passed the beginning and a few things that annoyed me slightly, I really did enjoy the overall story. The FMC & MMC didn't have a ton of on-page interactions, which I would have preferred more of, but I still read it fairly quickly. The rate I read and my desire to keep reading has me wanting to rate this around 4 Stars, however, the issues I had with the characters and overall plot brought The Proposition of the Season down to 3.5 Stars. Have you read The Proposition of the Season? What did you think? Let me know!

Goodreads description--A lady desperately seeking freedom. A prosperous younger man. An unexpected connection.

Anna Atwood returns to Breckenridge, where she spent one blissful summer as a young woman. This time, though, she comes to the quaint town as a penniless spinster with a single hope: to build a life free from the constraints her father’s death put on her and free from the persistent suitor Mr. Green, whose plans for marriage are Anna’s worst nightmare. When she runs into David Tate, the boy she knew from that memorable summer, she finds he has grown into a confident and striking man. As they rekindle their friendship, David offers her warmth and protection in the moment she needs it most—when Mr. Green appears in town and threatens to destroy Anna’s carefully laid plans.

David Tate remembers Anna as the spirited woman who once brought light into his dark childhood. Now a man of means, he has a promising future, if he can withstand the powerful Lord Murphy—a man whose menacing hold on the town he owns is surpassed only by his relentless hold on David’s life. When David meets Anna again, he realizes he has a chance to save her from Mr. Green’s schemes, even if it means putting David in danger of Lord Murphy’s wrath and revealing David’s deepest secrets.

In a moment of desperation, David and Anna agree to a proposal of convenience to provide the safety they both need. But as their attraction ignites, the looming dangers from Lord Murphy and Mr. Green threaten to destroy their budding happiness.

Esther Hatch is an auto-read author for me. I have loved every book I've read by her. And this one was no different.

Anna and her mother are in trouble. Her father passed and her relations have decided that they will no longer support Anna and her mother. But they just need a little over a year for Anna to be able to access her inheritance. Anna convinces her mother to return to Breckenridge where they spent one summer when Anna was seventeen. Some friends they made have a cottage that Anna and her mother can stay at, but only for two weeks because they have already rented it. Anna's only other option is to marry a man who is twice her age and as sleazy as they come.

However, their first day back, Anna runs into David who used to follow Anna around that summer. David is three years younger than Anna which isn't typical in historical fiction. David kept his family a secret from Anna back then. His father is Lord Murphy and is quite abusive. As adults, David and his sister Julia are mostly left alone at the family's country estate due to the sacrifice of their older brother, Griffin. David has been in love with Anna since he was fourteen. He had no idea if he would ever see her again though.

When the awful man pursuing Anna's hand shows up to a dinner, David takes matters into his own hands and declares that Anna can't marry Mr. Green because she is engaged to him. The two intend to call off their engagement in time because David has no plans to ever marry. This was a little confusing to me. He was obviously enamored with Anna from the start. So why go through so much trouble to "enjoy their engagement" when that would only leave him with the inevitable broken heart in the end. Yet I suppose he was just so thankful to get to have these moments with Anna that he never dreamed he would actually get.

The aspects involving Lord Murphy felt alittle unrealistic. A little too dramatic. But real life can definitely be stranger than fiction. And I appreciated this book touching on the idea of a member of the peerage being abusive. Obviously, that part could have been real.

Anna and David were such a great couple. And my heart broke for David and his siblings. I am interested to see if Esther Hatch will pursue stories for the side characters, Julia especially, but Griffin also.

Favorite quotes:

-"You see, if I were to fall from this branch right now—” I grabbed her arm. “Please don’t. David would be extremely disappointed in me if I allowed that.” “But if it were to happen—” I tightened my hold. “It won’t.” She narrowed one eye at me as if she simply wanted to finish her sentence. “The point is, I wouldn’t be sad for the climb, even if I fell. Even if I were in pain for days afterward.” ... “Here’s to the climb, then.”

-I’d thought losing my father had been excruciating, but having a father like mine— even if I’d had to lose him— had made my life a paradise compared to David’s.

If You'll Have Me is a semi-marriage of convenience--which is one of my favorite tropes. I rooted for Anna and David. I really liked that Anna was the one to be vulnerable first. As someone who was terrified of that in my life, I can respect it in others. If You'll Have Me gets 4 Stars. Have you read If You'll Have Me? What did you think? Let me know!
