Goodreads description--Louisa Cox is tired of fortune hunters pursuing her dowry. So when Lady Kellen offers to help her find an eligible suitor, Louisa eagerly accepts and makes a list of what she wants in a husband. The man selected is barrister Paul Sheldon. He may be a complete stranger, but he has one thing in his favor: he is unaware of her fortune. What Louisa did not anticipate was his curious behavior—or being so attracted to him. When Paul catches wind of the matchmaking organization his mother and her friends are establishing, he pities the fellow who will be caught in their scheme—until he realizes he is to be their first victim. Horrified, Paul determines to thwart his mother’s plans by whatever means necessary. After meeting his intended, however, his increasing desire to be near her threatens to disrupt his convictions. Louisa is everything he could want in a wife, and when an unexpected adventure sets in motion the very plan he had determined to halt, he almost wishes his mother’s plot could succeed. But Paul harbors a secret and a past that make it impossible for him to give Louisa the life she deserves.

Louisa lost her parents in a carriage accident. They didn't die at the same time. Her mother did die actually in the accident, and then her father died several days later from injuries sustained in the accident. Her brother has taken over the responsibility of her father's business (a factory if I remember correctly). He has been very busy, and Louisa desires to remove the burden of taking care of her from him. Plus, she has been very lonely. It isn't as though she's had no suitors, but the ones who have come around are only interested in her fortune. Louisa takes matters into her own hands. She conspires with an old friend of her mother's to make an arranged match. She will travel to his family home at the request of his mother and will give him a month to see if the two will fit well together. Louisa strives her very best to put on a brave and happy face, and I loved that about her.

Despite being set to inherit enough so that he need not work, Paul is determined to make his own way. He's studied law and become a barrister. And he finds that he enjoys the work. But his mother thinks it's past time for him to marry. He also has a compassionate heart that can get him into trouble--financial trouble anyway. Paul reminds me so much of my dad. My Dad has always been willing to give his last dime to someone in need at the expense of himself. Paul does this a little begrudgingly. At least he's happy to help some children but resents the parents for putting him in the position. Paul doesn't feel he can marry until he is financially stable. He's seen too well what happens when people marry before being stable.

Seeing Paul and Louisa's feelings was easy as day. These two were a cinch to read. But I felt so bad for Louisa. One can only endure so much rejection and she continued down her course of action much longer than most, I believe. Ultimately, I enjoyed the journey even if I did feel sympathy for Louisa.

I'm hoping this is turned into a series so that we can read the side characters getting set up by some match-making mamas.

Favorite quotes:

-If this charitable side of him was a virtue, it was also his greatest weakness.

-"But a person never realizes how close heaven is until they lose someone."

-"I don't like how I feel right now. After striving so hard, I cannot feel proud of my decisions." "In my experience, we all reach that conclusion now and then in our lives. It's a horrid state of emotion. What do you propose to do?"

-"He would not want you to pretend away your hurt but to use it to sympathize with others and lift them as you have me."

Bargaining for the Barrister was a fun read that hit my mood to a tee. I enjoyed Paul and Louisa's journey even though my heart hurt for Louisa. I was proud of her perseverance. I would love to see this turned into a series that follows the side characters. Bargaining for the Barrister gets 4 Stars. Have you read Bargaining for the Barrister? What did you think? Let me know!

Goodreads description--The last thing Amelia Kennington wants is to participate in the London Season. But the daughter of a duke is not afforded such opinions. She must put forth a subdued facade, but beneath it is a well-hidden fire that surfaces only when provoked—such as when an overly familiar gentleman startles her and she falls into the Serpentine.

Edward Drayton, the Earl of Norwich, has gained a reputation as Society’s most decorated rake. And while there are benefits to such a reputation, it no longer gives him the satisfaction it once did. This Season, he plans to find a wife—except she seems to find him instead. And she is nothing like he expected.

Scandal is inevitable following Edward and Amelia’s ill-conceived meeting, forcing them to marry. Amelia’s disdain for this man she hardly knows is more than clear, and Edward’s pride is wounded before their marriage has even truly begun. Yet, against all odds, the two slowly let their guard down, discovering the truth of who they married. But when Society gossip, a sister’s jealousy, and long-held secrets threaten their budding relationship, the unlikely couple must determine if their unconventional love is strong enough to withstand the opposition they face.

Sunday Post - 03/27/22

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ The Caffeinated Book Reviewer ~this meme was inspired in part by ~ In My Mailbox~ It's a chance to share News. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.

Well this was spring break for us. Little Girl left Saturday a week ago to go to Tennessee with my parents. They went horseback riding, to a waterpark, zip lining, snow tubing, shopping, and ate all the goodies. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday I dropped the boys off at my mother-in-law's house while I got a couple of hours in at our house painting. We were supposed to have bad weather on Tuesday, but it ended up not being as bad as predicted. Thursday, I took the boys to the zoo. We had a great day. The weather was perfect. The zoo had a moderate crowd--more people than I expected but not terribly busy. We took our time and spent more time there than any of the other times we've taken the kids. After, I grabbed a shaved ice treat for myself and got Little Boy a strawberry sundae. Saturday, Little Girl and my parents got back from their trip. We also had a fellowship dinner Saturday night. There's still so much to be done at our house, but it looks like we'll be moving back home. I am so excited because ball games start this week.

Jacob Barnes, soon to be ordained a vicar, has known Grace and Hope his whole life. Though close to both sisters, he’s dreamed of courting Hope for months. Goodreads description--She swore she would win the baronet’s heart in order to break it, never dreaming she would lose her own in the process. Millicent Wedgwood will never obtain her rightful place in Society, which means she will never have an advantageous reputation, marriage, or fortune. All because Millie's sister eloped years before. But there is a chance to rise above that disgrace if Millie will take part in a dare. If she can win the baronet who insulted Lady Olivia, and then shatter his heart, she will earn back her position in Society with Lady Olivia’s sponsorship.

Sir Isaac Fox returned from war with one less arm and a weight upon his soul. Where once he easily charmed Society, he now prefers to remain quietly alone at home. With a failing estate to manage, Isaac is determined to be more responsible and less foolhardy, which leaves no time for romance. Certainly no time for the infuriatingly enchanting Miss Wedgwood.

When Millie realizes her game has put her own heart in jeopardy, she risks losing everything she has so desperately sought to replace in her life. And though Isaac refuses Millie's advances, he cannot deny her charm. But falling for Miss Wedgwood would mean reentering society and losing the peace he has found since the war. Can they find a way to heal their hearts together? Or will Millie's deception ruin them both?

Goodreads description--Virginia Heath’s Never Rescue a Rogue, the next book in the Merriwell Sisters series, is filled with whip-smart banter, swoony romance, hilarious mishaps, and twisty reveals that will make you gasp and laugh in delight.

Diana Merriwell and Giles Sinclair only tolerate one another for the sake of their nearest and dearest. Everyone believes that the two of them are meant to be together, but Diana and Giles know that their constant pithy barbs come from a shared disdain—not a hidden attraction. Diana loves the freedom of working at the newspaper too much to give it up for marriage, and Giles is happily married to his bachelor lifestyle. But they do have one thing in common—the secrets they can’t risk escaping.

When Giles’ father, the curmudgeonly Duke of Harpenden unexpectedly turns up his toes, it’s only a matter of time before someone comes crawling out of the woodwork who knows the true circumstances of his only son's birth. As the threat of blackmail becomes real, Giles must uncover the truth of his parentage first, or else he and all those who depend upon him will be ruined—and dogged bloodhound Diana is his best hope at sniffing out the truth. As Giles and Diana dive into his family’s past, the attraction that the two of them insisted wasn’t there proves impossible to ignore. Soon, the future of the Sinclair estate isn’t the only thing on the line…

A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.

Husband had a dentist appointment on Monday. Tuesday ball practice got rained out, and I can't say that I'm upset about it. Wednesday I worked at the house between Baby Boy's morning nap and getting Little Boy from school. Thursday my mom went to work on the house since I couldn't. And then we had ball practice for both big kids Thursday evening. Friday we had thunderstorms and tons of rain, but I was still able to run to the house to paint for a bit until getting Little Boy from school. Friday evening and Saturday morning was running around and packing. Little Girl left Saturday morning to go on Spring Break with my parents to Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. My parents have a time share there so they go regularly. Today we're celebrating my mother-in-law's birthday with Husband's family.

Goodreads description--Harper is anxiously awaiting placement into a top oral surgery residency program when she crashes (literally) into Dan. Harper would rather endure a Novocaine-free root canal than face any distractions, even one this adorable.

A first-year dental student with a family legacy to contend with, Dan doesn’t have the same passion for pulling teeth that Harper does. Though he finds himself falling for her, he is willing to play by Harper’s rules.

So with the greatest of intentions and the poorest of follow-throughs, the two set out to be “just friends.” But as they get to know each other better, Harper fears that trading fillings for feelings may make her lose control and can't risk her carefully ordered life coming undone, no matter how drool-worthy Dan is.

Blood, gore, and extra-long roots? No problem. The idea of falling in love? Torture.

I almost decided not to request A Brush with Love due to the mention of Harper's anxiety in the description. I try to stay away from books that focus on mental illness. I prefer to read for fun, for relief, and escape from the struggles of life. That's one reason why I prefer to read romance--because of the happily ever afters. But I saw this one available on audiobook right when I needed a new book to listen to in the car. So I requested it. And, I should have stuck with my original instinct.

I want to start with the easiest thing to mention. The language. Oh my goodness. If this book were a movie it would have to be rated R simply because of the language. I mean you'd think this was a Netflix Original Series with all of the f-bombs dropped every other page. Sheesh. I know there are readers out there that aren't bothered by this, but I'm not a fan. And the cursing was excessive.

Harper's friends were annoying. (Side note: one negative to an audiobook and characters with unique names is that I have no idea how to spell them. Out of Harper's 3 close friends, Lizzie is the only one I could remotely guess how to spell.) I'm really trying not to be judgmental, but I guess I kind of just am. These are girls I would not want to hang out with. I suppose they're supposed to be typical college girls concerned about screwing around and getting drunk. I just can't comprehend why grabbing an alcoholic drink has become the normal thing to do when life gets hard. Again, I'm creeping into the judgy territory, so I'll move onto to my next issue.

I had a hard time connecting to Harper. At first, I was thinking her anxiety wasn't such a big deal. I mean the things she was worried or concerned about seemed like things that everyone worries about. But she does have an added layer to her anxiety with the panic attacks. Understanding what she went through with losing her mom at such a young age in such a tragic way helped me to feel compassion towards her. And yet, I still struggled listening to her perspective when all she did was push people away, Dan and her friends. Understanding it and agreeing with it are not the same thing. So even though I understood her why, I didn't find the journey to be enjoyable. And I don't suppose it was supposed to be. Almost all growth is difficult. But again, I don't read to get bogged down in the depressing aspects of life. I like to be lifted up. Not to ruin things for any potential readers, but I do want to give you hope that Harper does end up working on herself, and that's redeeming for this particular struggle for me.

Also, the feminist versus "toxic masculinity" statements also got on my nerves. I'm not even sure "toxic masculinity" is the right phrase for most of the examples. But it kind of reminded me of how Miranda Kenneally can only write a Christian character that's hypocritical. I mean, obviously, these people do exist, but not all Christians are hypocrites. Just like, not all men are toxic or feel threatened by women in the workplace or feel like women need to remain in some box. Again, sure these people exist, but Mazey Eddings seemed to write only men who fall into this category, except of course the main male character and well perhaps his friend. It reminds me of how when you're car shopping you start to see your favorite car everywhere. Maybe this is a legit struggle I'm unaware of in dental school, but I don't see this in the majority of the men I know.

Perhaps my biggest pet peeve is when Harper and Dan had their big blow up. Harper feels betrayed by Dan's attempts to help her the only way he knew how in the situation he was given. And so she lashes out at him. He hurt her so she has to hurt him back. I cannot abide this in real life and I do not want to read about characters who behave this way either. I find that I cannot root for them. Again, I can understand where one's pain is coming from, but I do not want to surround myself with people who lash out simply because they've been hurt. There comes a time and a place when we sometimes have to say things that hard to those we love, and they feel hurt at hearing those words. But this is different. This was a purposeful retaliation. And there is no place for retaliation in love or in any relationships that I want to be a part of. Of course, to err is human and to forgive is divine.

Ultimately, I have to look at how I felt during this entire process. If I'm honest, I considered DNFing A Brush with Love at 80%, but sheesh, I'd come so far. At 94%, I still considered DNFing. I asked myself, "Am I in a place where I want to read (listen) to anything that is causing me to feel so intensely annoyed and angry?" And the answer was "no." I don't need any additional negativity in my life and things are stressful enough in real life not to read anything that's going to cause me to be in a bad mood. And unfortunately, I was so annoyed with the characters that I worried it would leak into my mood. Since I was so frustrated with the characters and didn't enjoy this journey at all, A Brush with Love gets 2 Stars. Have you read (or listened to) A Brush with Love? What did you think? Let me know!

Sunday Post - 03/13/22

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ The Caffeinated Book Reviewer ~this meme was inspired in part by ~ In My Mailbox~ It's a chance to share News. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.

I forgot my Sunday Post last week. I vaguely remember what happened that week. This past week Little Girl came home from school feeling a bit crummy. She ended up running fever and throwing up Monday night. She stayed home from school Tuesday and Wednesday. I went to work on the house on Wednesday between Baby Boy going down for a nap and getting Little Boy from school. Thursday Little Girl went back to school and even had a practice softball game. She did so well. She got the first two outs of the game and got a good base hit. They only played one inning where each kid got to bat no matter how many outs. Friday, I also went to the house to paint. I feel the mom guilt big time. I feel guilty for leaving the kids when I go work on the house, but I feel guilty for not working on the house when I could go. Mom guilt is real. I feel for the working moms who feel this every day when they leave for work. Saturday, I went to the house and worked the majority of the day. I finished painting Little Boy's room and worked on spackling nail holes where my dad was hanging crown molding and doing base trim. It feels like we're getting so close to being able to move back home.

Goodreads description--A chauffer’s daughter finds herself in the middle of a love triangle with the sons of her boss’s wealthy next-door neighbors in this delightfully romantic story from the author of Alex, Approximately, Jenn Bennett.

Love—and Fen Sarafian—do not care about your summer plans.

Eighteen-year-old chauffeur’s daughter Jane Marlow grew up among the domestic staff of a wealthy LA rock producer, within reach of bands she idolizes, but never a VIP. Every summer, Jane and her father head to the Sierras to work at the producer’s luxury lodge at Lake Condor—a resort town and the site of a major musical festival.

The legendary family who runs the festival are the Sarafians, and Jane’s had a longtime crush on their oldest son, Eddie—doltish but sweet. So when a long-distance romance finally sparks between them, she doesn’t hesitate to cross class lines.

But Jane’s feelings about Eddie are thrown into question after she returns to the lake and reconnects with his alluringly intense brother, the dark horse of her placid summer plans. A fellow lover of music—and hater of the game—Fen Sarafian has been ousted from the family and is slumming it at a vinyl record shop. He burns for Jane like a house on fire and will do anything to sabotage his older brother, even if it means taking a wrecking ball to a multi-million-dollar music festival. Or Jane’s heart.

Goodreads description--Two childhood sweethearts find a second chance at love in this adult romance debut from a critically acclaimed young adult author.

Shelby Springfield has spent the last ten years trying to overcome her past, sanding it away like she does the rough spots on the vintage furniture finds she makes over. But as a former child star, it’s hard to forget a mediocre pop career, a meltdown widely documented by the paparazzi, and a huge public break with her former co-star Lyle Jessup. It’s also hard to forget her other co-star and childhood sweetheart, Cameron Riggs -- the one who got away.

Anytime Shelby has called, Cameron has come running… And then he runs right off again to chase stories around the world by making documentaries, too scared to admit what he really wants. But when Lyle stirs the pot, getting the two back in the spotlight with a home renovation show, Cameron can't help but come on board.

There's something in it for everyone -- almost. Cameron wants to come home and set down some roots. Shelby wants to prove to the world she's not the messy party girl anymore. And Lyle wants to twist the screws on his two childhood friends who had more chemistry than he could dream of with anyone. Sparks and sawdust fly as Shelby and Cameron film the pilot for "Homemade" and battle Lyle’s shenanigans at every turn.

Erin Hahn’s sparkling rom com debut, Built to Last, is a second chance romance sure to have readers falling in love fast.

Goodreads description--This is a love story. It's the story of a second-hand bookshop called Howling Books where people leave letters to strangers, or those they love, or want to love, between the pages of books in the Letter Library.

Henry Jones and Rachel Sweetie are best friends. Or they were. Before Rachel moved away to the sea. Now, she's back, grieving for her brother Cal who drowned in the sea that he loved.

Rachel loves Henry. Henry loves Amy. Amy loves Amy but is happy for Henry to love her too.

This is a book about books. About the power of literature to cradle our past, present and future selves. It's about how we leave ourselves behind when we die. How we leave our histories in the things we love - like books.

That's it for my shelves and recaps of my past and upcoming week. What did you add to your shelves this week? Any bookish news you want to talk about? Let me know!

The Heart's Charge - Review

The Heart's Charge (Hanger's Horsemen, # 2)

Goodreads description--Members of Hanger's Horsemen, Mark Wallace and Jonah Brooks arrive in Llano County, Texas, to deliver a steed, never expecting they'd deliver a baby as well. Left with an infant to care for, they head to a nearby foundling home, where Mark encounters the woman he'd nearly married a decade ago.

After failing at love, Katherine Palmer dedicated her life to caring for children, teaming up with Eliza Southerland to start Harmony House. From mixed ancestry, illegitimate, and female, Eliza understands the pain of not fitting society's mold. Yet those are the very attributes that lead her to minister to outcast children. The taciturn Jonah intrigues her with his courage and kindness, but there are secrets behind his eyes--ghosts from wars past and others still being waged.

However, when a handful of urchin children from the area go missing, a pair of Horsemen are exactly what the women need. Working together to find the children, will these two couples find love as well?

I read At Love's Command in 2020. I knew I wanted to read the other Horsemen's stories, and I jumped at the chance to get The Heart's Charge for review. Yet when I got it, I wasn't in the mood for it. I sometimes hate it about myself, but I am such a mood reader. I almost say that I can't force myself to read something that I'm not in the mood for, but that's not exactly accurate. I can, but I hate doing that. Anyway, I finally broke down and picked it up even though I still wasn't quite in the mood.

The Heart's Charge ended up being better than I expected. First of all, there are two love stories. Both Mark Wallace and Jonah Brooks share this book, and I loved reading about both of their stories. I loved their friendship with each other.

I've been listening to an audiobook while I'm driving to get the kids from school and I was reading this book at the same time, and I couldn't help but contrast these two books. One has a woman that struggles with anxiety and panic attacks. This book has two strong women who aren't satisfied to sit by the side when they can be useful even though historically it would be more difficult for women to be as active as modern-day. The other book has a feminist slant and this book shows men and women working in tandem to have the strongest relationship possible by using the strengths of both parties. I just couldn't help but notice the differences in these two stories and their approaches. I much prefer this type of story to the ones more focused on the characters being victims.

I was impressed with the amount of Bible verses used in The Heart's Charge. Often, I find myself annoyed with stories that push an agenda or a message, but you can't read "Christian fiction" without expecting there to be a focus on Christian messages to some degree or other. But to be honest, I was impressed with how each lesson and verse tied into the story and felt like lessons the characters were meant to learn and not lessons the author was trying to preach to the reader. And that is what makes the difference to me.

Favorite quotes:

-He had nothing against putting down roots. He just hadn't found the right soil yet.

-She very much feared that Jonah Brooks was not a man to be pigeonholed. Which meant he was a man who needed to fly her coop as soon as possible.

-A gift bestowed by God couldn't be stolen by man. Or woman. It might be neglected or stifled, but never stolen.

-"Lessons taught from love bring wisdom. Lessons spawned from fear and pain often come with cynicism and bitterness attached, which can cloud the truth."

-"Satan uses loneliness to isolate and depress. But God uses it to build compassion."

-Hunger, sickness, ostracism--people afflicted with such things care only about a warm meal, healing medicine, and a compassionate touch.

-...a man considering a commitment to one woman should not behave in a way that could lead her to believe him fickle in his affections. Nor should he give another woman reason to believe his interest lay anywhere other than where it did.

-Friendly was different than flirty.

-He didn't mind a strategic surrender every now and again.

-Risks were always assessed but seldom allowed to stand in the way of progress.

-Could it be that being subject to a husband who loved her with sacrificial dedication meant freedom instead of subjugation?

-Leave tomorrow alone, girl. Her mother's oft-voiced scold echoed in Eliza's mind. The Lord's the only one strong enough to carry the future. You'll wear yourself out tryin'.

The Heart's Charge hooked me, and I didn't want to stop reading when I had to. It was easy to see how much better reading about strong characters (both male and female) is than reading about characters that want to be victims. I enjoyed the Scripture used because it felt like the lessons were for the characters and not for the readers. The Heart's Charge gets 4 Stars. Have you read The Heart's Charge? What did you think? Let me know!

Goodreads description--At eleven years of age, Rosalind Ainsworth was convinced that Sebastian Lumley, the future Duke of Kelbrook, was the most odious young man she’d ever met. And ten years later, after having had no contact with the nobleman in the intervening time, her opinion of him has not changed. Unfortunately, neither has the marriage contract their fathers signed soon after her birth.

As Rosalind’s twenty-first birthday and the appointed wedding day approaches, Sebastian makes a rare appearance in London. His first meeting with Rosalind since childhood goes less than perfectly, but Sebastian has a compelling reason for honoring their marriage contract—a reason outlined in a document kept behind his workshop’s locked door.

After a quick wedding, the new couple relocates to Finley Park, where their acquaintanceship slowly blossoms into affection. But when Sebastian’s secretive work threatens their fledgling relationship and Rosalind’s life is placed in jeopardy, Sebastian finds himself forced to choose between the man he has pledged to help and the woman he has come to love.

11th Blog Anniversary Giveaway Week 1

Somewhere Only We Know is 11 years old today! I am happy to announce that I'm still enjoying reading and blogging. I don't stress about it as much as I once did, but I don't have as much time as I once did to dedicate to either. Somewhere Only We Know used to be so much a part of my routine and daily life that I didn't even really wonder when I'd fit it into my schedule. Since having kids and the general changes of daily life that has been more difficult and requires some adjustment. I missed celebrating my 10th anniversary because I had a newborn last year, but we're here to celebrate my 11th blogiversary! As always, I love celebrating this accomplishment by giving back to you guys. I'm happy to give away one (1) e-book of your choice up to $10 USD. Normally I offer some suggestions for some of my favorite reads over the last year, but I figure you probably have a book or two that you've been keeping your eye on.

Also don't forget to check out my Giveaway Policy (open internationally as long as you can receive a book or gift card from Amazon.com).

Goodreads description--A clever, tender, and romantic "Nora Ephron romp for the modern ages" (Christina Lauren) for readers of Jasmine Guillory, Abby Jimenez, and Sophie Cousens, this laugh-out-loud debut is a perceptive reminder that fate can have a sense of humor, and that love can happen . . . In a New York Minute.

Franny Doyle is having the worst day. She’s been laid off from her (admittedly mediocre) job, the subway doors ripped her favorite silk dress to ruins, and now she’s flashed her unmentionables to half of lower Manhattan. On the plus side, a dashing stranger came to her rescue with his (Gucci!) suit jacket. On the not-so-plus side, he can’t get away from her fast enough.

Worse yet? Someone posted their (entirely not) meet-cute online. Suddenly Franny and her knight-in-couture, Hayes Montgomery III, are the newest social media sensation, and all of New York is shipping #SubwayQTs.

Only Franny and Hayes couldn’t be a more disastrous match. She’s fanciful, talkative, and creative. He’s serious, shy, and all about numbers. Luckily, in a city of eight million people, they never have to meet again. Yet somehow, Hayes and Franny keep running into each other—and much to their surprise, they enjoy each other’s company. A lot. But when Franny’s whole world is turned upside down (again!), can she find the courage to trust in herself and finally have the life—and love—she’s always wanted?
