Top 10 Best/Worst Book to Movie Adaptations

Top 10 Tuesday is a post hosted by The Broke and the Bookish and this week's topic is Top Ten Best/Worst Movie Adaptations.

Worst

  1. Twilight by Stephenie Meyer- Ok come on. Seriously! I LOVE this book--still! But this movie was CHEE-to-the-ZEE! There was so much wrong with this movie. Robert Pattison's horrible sunglasses (that are actually his), the horrible "stank" face that Robert P. made in biology class. The whole spider monkey thing. The "it's really just a scary story." Taylor Lautner's AWFUL wig! Oh yeah...I love Twilight--and I've seen this movie a dozen time. But it is BAD! As in the worst!
  2. Best (some of these I haven't read the books so...yeah, take that into consideration)

  3. Harry Potter by JK Rowling - Of course I've read the books. And these are ALL great movies. Sure there are some deviations. But I don't think any of the movies take away from the books.
  4. The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkein - I have read these books and the only big thing I remember being all that different was the huge section the movies left out of the beginning book 1--The Fellowship of the Ring. But since that part was thoroughly boring and confusing, I think they made a good call.
  5. The Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis- Ok so I haven't actually read these books--though I know I need to. But these movies are pretty dern stinking awesome.
  6. Breaking Dawn (Pt 2) by Stephenie Meyer- Look, y'all know that twist they threw in at the end was EPIC!
  7. The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold- Another one I haven't read the book, but this movie was majorly good.
  8. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins- I know people have their beef, but I enjoyed it.
  9. Something Borrowed by Emily Griffin- I haven't read the book of this one either, but my sister has. She said the movie was a pretty good adaptation from the book--though like always, there were some differences. I enjoyed the movie for the most part.
  10. Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Roirdan- Yeah, haven't read these books either. But I saw nothing to complain about in the movie.
  11. (this one is a bit of a cheat) A Song of Ice & Fire by George R R Martin - because it's a TV show! I LOVE it and for only having 10 shows each season, they do a remarkable job covering all that the books cover.

So that's my best and worst book to movie adaptations. What are yours? Let me know!

  1. Narnia is a hard one for me. I couldn't put it on either list.. it was well done but I have mixed feelings on it. The Lightning Thief was one that I couldn't stand because I have read the series. They leave out some important plot lines that carry through the whole series and ruin the whole first book in the first minute.

  2. If you read The Lightning Thief, you will see just how epicly horrible the movie adaptation was. I think if I hadn't read the book, the movie would've been enjoyable. Because I know exactly how much was changed/omitted, it ruined the whole experience for me. :(

  3. I've only read THG, LOTR, Harry Potter and Twilight so I don't know about the others. But I have to agree with you in for this four movies.

  4. I love the LotR movies. They were great adaptations. I hated the Something Borrowed movie and couldn't even finish it. Game of Thrones is amazing. I haven't read the books, but I love that series. Great list!

  5. I haven't read The Chronicles of Narnia but am keen to - I only enjoyed the first out the series movie wise though.

I've read The Lovely Bones but not seen the film, I have heard how good it is but I don't know whether that will take away from book experience in a positive or negative way.

    A great list :-)

  6. I agree about Twilight! But I think the whole series of movies was the worst. I loved the books though. And I saw The Lovely Bones but I didn't really like it. It was good but then the ending threw me. I need to read the book!

  7. Great top ten! Breaking Dawn pt. 2 was better than the rest of the Twilight movies, I agree:)

  8. See, I think that when you haven't read the books, like you said with The Lightning Thief, you can't really say whether you think it is a good adaptation. You can only say it was a good movie for you, which is a different thing entirely. As I mentioned in my post, my students who had read The Lightning Thief with me in class, didn't like the movie, but the friends they went with that hadn't read it, did enjoy it. Other than that, I pretty much agree with your list! I almost did a tv series too, but couldn't decide if that counted or not. :-)

  9. I guess I was looking at this topic in a slightly different direction as most people. Thanks for stopping by though. I've got The Lightning Thief on my TBR list, guess I need to read it and see what I'm missing.

  10. It's on my TBR list, so I guess I need to see what I'm missing. Thanks for stopping by!

  12. I think I had a slightly different thought process for this topic as everyone else. I've got The Lightning Thief on my TBR list, guess I need to bump it further to the top. Thanks for stopping by.

  13. I agree with you about Twilight!

Why the hell was Kristen Stewart cast as Bella?!?That kind of lost the movie's appeal because of her poor acting skills!

And, I wish Hunger Games had more action and they never once mentioned The Mockingjay pin!

  14. The actors are rarely what I picture in my head. Sometimes I find myself disregarding how the author describes the character anyway and just making up how I think they should look. :)

They did have a scene with the mockingjay pin, right? Just didn't really explain it? I can't remember--I've only seen the movie once. I need to re-watch it soon.

  15. Yeah, when the movie was not yet released I used to make up my own Bella, and she was definitely better than Kristen!
Yeah, the pin was there but not in the way the books mentioned ,like there was no Madge!

  16. Haha...I really try to go into the movies knowing they're going to be so different from the books and then try to enjoy them for completely different things apart from the books. Sometimes that's easier than others. I'm sure THG people just didn't want to pay for another actor who doesn't really have that much of a role. Even though she serves a very symbolic part in the books, she doesn't have a huge role. So I kind of get that.

  17. Yeah, who cares for a mayor's daughter who gave the most significant thing to 'The Girl On Fire'?
I guess thats how things work!
