The Viscount & the Vicar's Daughter - Review

The Viscount and the Vicar's Daughter

Goodreads description--A WORLD-WEARY RAKE

After years of unbridled debauchery, Tristan Sinclair, Viscount St. Ashton has hit proverbial rock bottom. Seeking to escape his melancholy, he takes refuge at one of Victorian society’s most notorious house parties. As the Christmas season approaches, he prepares to settle in for a month of heavy drinking…until an unexpected encounter changes his plans—and threatens his heart.

A PRIM VICAR'S DAUGHTER

Valentine March is not the drab little spinster she appears to be. When her new job as a lady’s companion lands her smack in the middle of Yorkshire with England’s most infamous rake, she resolves to keep her head down and her eyes fixed firmly on her future—a future which most definitely does not include a sinfully handsome viscount.

A MATCH MADE IN SCANDAL

A friendship is impossible. An affair out of the question. But when one reckless act binds them together, will two star-crossed souls discover there’s more to each other than meets the eye? Or will revelations from the past end their fragile romance before it begins?

I found Miami Matthews with the release of The Lost Letter . And I've read all of her published books since and have been slowly working my way through the books she published prior. The Viscount and the Vicar's Daughter went on sale, and I snatched it up. When I finished a fantasy retelling, I knew switching things up to historical fiction would be the best way to keep me from going into a reading slump and so I picked up this book.

The Viscount and the Vicar's Daughter was a quick and short read coming in at just over 200 pages. Tristan St. Ashton is a notorious rake. He's spent the last twenty years gambling, drinking, and bouncing from woman to woman. He's headed to a house party that is notorious for basically being an orgy. But he's been alerted that his father, the Earl, is ready to intercept him with some lecture or other. When he stumbles upon a crying woman he uses the opportunity to delay interacting with his father.

Valentine March has just hired on as a lady's companion for one of the women attending the same house party as Tristan. She's unaware of the party's true nature, but she needs the money as her mother died in childbirth with her and her father recently passed away. Her heart is broken because her mother's drawings, the last tangible link she had to her, were destroyed by her employer's spiteful daughter. Tristan stumbles upon her and he's rude, truthful, and comforting to her.

Tristan warns Valentine of the nature of the house party as well as the reputation of Viscount St. Ashton...himself. He just doesn't exactly tell her he's talking about himself since he introduced himself to her with his Christian name. Upon arrival at the house, Tristan's father tells him that within the year he will be cut off from his father's funds if he doesn't straighten up and stop his wild behavior. In a bit of a tizzy and slightly inebriated, Tristan follows Valentine to the conservatory and proceeds to entice her into a kiss that turns quite passionate. The two are discovered by Valentine's employer, her daughter, and Tristan's father. And so begins the plans to minimize the scandal and save Valentine's reputation.

The two agree to marry and have a bit of an instalove relationship. But they have to spend a little time apart to distance themselves from the scandal and do everything above board. The time apart allows Tristan to find himself and something he can be passionate about that both is and isn't spurred by Valentine. And she spends the time connecting with her late mother's family.

The Viscount and the Vicar's Daughter wasn't a perfect read for me. It felt more surface-level than many of Mimi Matthews' other books have been. Yet I didn't mind because it was just a feel-good, fun, and fast book. If you enjoy stories where the bad boy turns good to win the girl, you'll probably like The Viscount and the Vicar's Daughter . I'm giving this book 3.5 Stars. Have you read The Viscount and the Vicar's Daughter? What did you think? Let me know!

Sunday Post & Stacking the Shelves - 03/28/21

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ The Caffeinated Book Reviewer ~this meme was inspired in part by ~ In My Mailbox~ It's a chance to share News. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.

Little Girl left last Saturday to go to Gatlinburg with her grandparents on Spring Break. I was excited about having some extra time to spend with our middle child. And we did. Yet I also brought a spring sinus infection with me and felt miserable most of the week. Baby Boy had his 2 month check up Monday. He's already 14 pounds 14 ounces (which is MORE than Little Boy weighed at 4 months old). Tuesday, my brother needed to bring a check by our house, and he went with us to the park and to grab some lunch. Tuesday afternoon I had the craziest experience. I saw a teenager jump the fence to our neighbor's house across the street. Their house has been broken into in the past so I immediately called the police since no one was home. Well come to find out, the daughter of the man who lives there has recently moved in with them and she was sneaking her boyfriend in the house. The young adult (am I still a young adult at 34 years old???) in me felt so bad for busting her. Yet the parent in me would appreciate someone calling the cops on my fifteen year old daughter trying to sneak someone in my house. The rest of the week we had rainy weather and stayed home. Our state had tornados on Thursday, but thankfully the weather for our specific area didn't get too bad. Little Girl and my parents were supposed to head home on Saturday, but Friday night my dad called about 8 pm that my daughter had thrown up twice. I felt so helpless because they were about 6 hours away from us. Well by 1 am Saturday morning, my dad called that he was taking my daughter and my mom who was now sick to the ER. By 2, my dad was throwing up too. They were going to be released from the ER about 6 am but my dad started vomitting again and the doctor wanted to give him an IV. They decided to stay another night to get well. They slept about 16 hours and still it was Sunday afternoon before they felt well enough to travel. They're still not home, and my mama heart needs to see my baby soon.

Goodreads description--Captain Charles Malvern owes a great debt to the man who saved his life--especially since Major Richardson lost his own life in the process. The best way to honor that hero's dying wish is for Malvern to escort the man's grieving fiance and mother safely to a new cottage home by the sea. But along the way, he learns of another obligation that has fallen on his shoulders: his uncle has died and the captain is now the Earl of Rothwell.

Goodreads description--She would know the world of vengeful gods and monsters, and the lengths one would go for love. And nothing would ever be the same for her again.

Gifted thief Romeria has flourished from her days as a street kid pilfering wallets to survive. Now she thrives, stealing jewels from the rich under the involuntary employ of New York City’s most notorious crime boss. But when an enigmatic woman secures her services at swordpoint, Romeria is plunged into a startling realm of opposing thrones, warring elven, and elemental magic she cannot begin to fathom.

Her quest is straightforward: Steal a stone from Islor’s sacred garden without anyone discovering her true identity, which would earn her certain death. But the identity she has inexplicably assumed is that of the captured Ybarisan princess—an enemy to Islor after she poisoned their beloved king and queen on the day she was to marry the prince.

Her betrothed, the newly crowned King Zander, detests her with every grain of his handsome being. Fortunately for Romeria, she is more valuable to him alive than dead. Zander gives her a choice: life in a cell, or an acquittal of all charges in exchange for her help in exposing the growing plot against him.

Romeria sees no other option and embraces the tricky role of smitten queen-to-be until she can escape, a ruse that brings her far closer to the king than she anticipated and threatens more than her safety. As she digs deeper into this sacred garden and the ancient feud between Ybaris and Islor, she discovers monstrous truths that could spell ruin for all.

Encouraging Words for Mothers: Morning Evening: Daily Devotions for a Mother's Soul

Goodreads description--Moms, find wisdom and support when you really need it!

This 365-day morning and evening devotional book is by a mom—award-winning writer Michelle Medlock Adams—for moms. Especially for women with children still at home, Encouraging Words for Mothers offers brief, relevant, and biblical reflections with monthly themes such as worry, unconditional love, discipline, and praying. Each will show you how scripture applies to your everyday life—and equip you to be the best mom you can be.

Encouraging Words for Mothers is a 365 day devotional. I've learned that devotional intended to cover an entire year aren't my favorite. Even if each day's devotional is short, I often lose interest before the year is complete. And that was sort of the case for me with Encouraging Words for Mothers.

This devotional does have short devotions. It is designed for one a day and is split into a section to be read in the morning and one in the evening. Both are short enough that reading them at the same time made the most sense to me. There is a verse for the day/topic and a short prayer. Normally, I prefer a little more meat to my devotions. I prefer deep topics that make me think, but in this season of life with 3 kids 5 and under, short and sweet hits the spot. I feel like this devotional is especially geared towards mothers with very young children. Life is just so busy with taking care of the needs of others that even this short devotional should be fine to work into a daily schedule.

For me though, I knew I was reviewing this book and I really didn't need to take a year to do so. Thus I would read as large of a section of devotionals at a time that I felt I could before putting it down for the day. Doing this, however, led me to fatigue and I ended up putting the entire devotional down for an extended period.

I always take issue with books that use paraphrase translations of the Bible. Particularly, The Message translation is a pet peeve of mine. I personally use literal translations. I've talked about this on my blog enough that I won't get into much detail about it here in this review. Even if the intent of the author was only to use this translation as a supplement to their own study, it can give the unknowing reader the idea that the translation is a great option for their personal study Bible if they're looking for one.

The author discusses a few things that I didn't 100% agree with. I never expect to agree with anyone else 100% of the time though. I do know the topic of spanking will be an issue for some readers. Just be aware of that going into the book and you won't be surprised.

Encouraging Words for Mothers is a great devotional for the busy Mom. I especially think this one is good and applicable for the Mother of very young children, like myself. It isn't too deep in terms of content, but sometimes that isn't the season of life that you're in. Paraphrased translations of the Bible were often used which is a pet peeve of mine. Encouraging Words for Mothers gets 3.5 Stars. Have you read Encouraging Words for Mothers ? What did you think? Let me know!

A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.

I'm still adjusting to three children. We're settling into a pretty good daily routine, but I'm still trying to figure out how to fit blogging into the mix. Baby Boy is a good sleeper. He's overall a really good baby. Most of the time the struggles come when more than one child needs something from me at the same time. I'm actually reading right now when I can (which isn't often). My last grandparent, Nanny, hasn't been doing so well. She's been in and out of the hospital since about the time Baby Boy was born. We were able to go see her two Saturdays ago. That was much needed. She got to meet Baby Boy and we got to spend some time with her. She lives about 3 hours away so visiting regularly isn't easy. Little Girl left yesterday to go with my parents to the Smokey Mountains. She'll be gone all of spring break. I'm glad she'll get the experience, and I'm actually thankful to have a little more 1 on 1 time with our middle child. Being in the middle is hard, isn't it? No new books this week.

Goodreads description--As the successful owner of multiple railroad lines, Diana Barton is all too accustomed to fending off suitors seeking to stake their claim on her wealth. The ruse will be no hardship—she’s secretly been fascinated by the man for years.

Lord Bryant is well aware of his questionable reputation. Indeed, he has cultivated the image carefully, and the last thing he wants is a wife. Goodreads description--Filled with action, emotion, and lyrical writing, New York Times bestselling author Adrienne Young returns with Namesake, the final book in the captivating Fable duology.

Trader. Fighter. Survivor.

With the Marigold ship free of her father, Fable and its crew were set to start over. That freedom is short-lived when she becomes a pawn in a notorious thug’s scheme. In order to get to her intended destination she must help him to secure a partnership with Holland, a powerful gem trader who is more than she seems.

As Fable descends deeper into a world of betrayal and deception she learns that her mother was keeping secrets, and those secrets are now putting the people Fable cares about in danger. If Fable is going to save them then she must risk everything, including the boy she loves and the home she has finally found.

Fable was one of my favorite reads from 2020. Considering the cliffhanger that it ended with, I would have started Namesake immediately if I had it in my possession. So when I saw it for review request, I jumped on it. And read it as soon as I could.

Due to the nature of events--Fable being kidnapped by Zola--Namesake didn't exactly start off in the best of places. She's surrounded by enemies that pose a threat to her even if they've been warned not to touch her. Zola needs her to do a job for him along with as many other dredgers as he can get. What's more, Clove, who used to be her father's right-hand man, is crewing for Zola as well. Fable takes this to mean that even he can't be trusted. I won't discuss much more about the plot so that I don't spoil anything.

Fable isn't even sure that West will look for her, but she should have known better. West is willing to do just about anything to get Fable back. He's determined not to return to the Narrows without her. Even at the detriment of himself, his crew, his ship... anything is fair game in his attempt to save Fable. I felt slightly conflicted because these two could use some communication skills, but trust and love were there between them.

All of the side characters were lively even if I wish we'd had a little more time with them, particularly Koy and Willa. Even Saint didn't have much of a role. I mean he was integral but also absent.

The world is still one of my favorite parts of this series. The ships and the dives. The gems and various ports of call. All of that made this world a place I'd love to return to in the future.

I won't say that I enjoyed Namesake quite as much as Fable, but it was a pretty good follow up. So much of the plot was about one-upping the various big bad enemies. But I enjoyed the relationships and world-building. I would love to read more books in this setting. Namesake gets 4 Stars. Have you read Namesake ? What did you think? Let me know!

Forever Phoebe - Review

Forever Phoebe

Goodreads description--At the dignified age of eighteen, Phoebe Jamison knows she should behave in a manner befitting her station, as her three loving elder brothers often tease. Unfortunately, the lively young woman has a personality every bit as fiery as her red hair, a fact brought to her attention in the criticism from the gentleman she has long pined for. But not every man is of the opinion that a woman should be decorous above all else. The newest resident of Somerset, Mr. Franklin Everly, is considered a most eligible bachelor, and he is immediately drawn to Phoebe’s spirited nature as he becomes acquainted with the delightful Jamison siblings of Primly Park. Franklin embarks on a friendship with Phoebe that quickly deepens into a warm and thrilling connection. But even as he fights for Phoebe’s attentions, a very real danger is revealed: girls in neighboring villages have gone missing, and the kidnapper is moving ever closer to Primly Park. Despite the guard of her fiercely protective brothers and Franklin, Phoebe must rely on her own strength when she finds herself in the sights of the Bride Snatcher.

I wasn't sure about Forever Phoebe mostly because I was unfamiliar with the author, but also, because I don't always want to read mysteries. Sometimes I'm in the mood for mysteries but not always. But I picked it up when I did due to the publication date, and I ended up reading it mostly in one day.

I have to admit that I fell in love with the entire Jamison family. Phoebe is much like the description states. She's used to being included with her brothers whether that be racing horses, shooting pistols, or teasing each other mercilessly. She has always wanted her brother Peter's close friend William Mason to show her particular attention, but Mason seems to only offer "constructive criticism" rather than compliments.

Peter is the closest brother in age to Phoebe. He seems to be the biggest joker of the brothers. Abraham is the fashionable one, but I think he got the least amount of page time being the middle brother. And then her oldest brother was often just referred to as Jamison. I can't remember his first name off the top of my head. But he was perhaps the most serious given he's the oldest and the responsible one while their parents are traveling. He also has a bit of a romance develop throughout the book.

Franklin moves to the neighborhood because he has inherited Ravenhouse from his uncle. He had intentions to put off his inheritance but after his older brother marries he sees the need for his brother and his new wife to have some time alone. Once in the neighborhood, he meets the Jamison siblings and quickly begins to see traits within Phoebe that he admires. Unlike Mason who is only ever critical, Franklin appreciates Phoebe for who she is. And he seeks to begin winning her favor. They had a sweet love story, and I enjoyed every page of it.

The mystery...well that felt a little unnecessary to me. It wasn't really a focal point of the book until the ending and major conflict for the climax of the story. Yet at the same time, I wasn't put off by it as I sometimes find. I think I would have enjoyed the story just the same without this part, but including it didn't lessen my enjoyment of Forever Phoebe either.

Overall, Forever Phoebe gets 4 Stars from me. I loved the romance and the side characters. I would love future books about the other Jamison brothers. And the mystery neither added to nor took away from the rest of the story for me. Have you read Forever Phoebe ? What did you think? Let me know!

The son of a powerful Bollywood family, soap opera star Dev Dixit is used to drama, but a strange woman who accuses him of wooing her online, well, that’s a new one. As much as he’d like to focus on his Hollywood fresh start, he can’t get Jia out of his head. Especially once he starts to suspect who might have used his famous name to catfish her…

When paparazzi blast their private business into the public eye, Dev is happy to engage in some friendly fake dating to calm the gossips and to dazzle her family. But as the whole world swoons over their relationship, Jia can’t help but wonder: Can an online romance-turned-offline-fauxmance ever become love in real life?

I blew through First Comes Like. I really like the modern issues that couples face due to technology in this series (although I haven't read book 1). Husband and I utilized email in our early relationship so I appreciate seeing these aspects presented in a realistic way.

First Comes Like was exactly like the description states, yet still different from what I had in mind. When Jia finally meets Dev, he immediately feels an attraction to her but has no idea who she is. She's hurt and embarrassed. He attempts to investigate who could have written the messages to her in his name and is determined to make things up to her as much as possible. This causes them to interact more and eventually come up with the plan to fake date. Of course, getting to know each other sparks feelings on both sides, but neither knows where the other stands.

I devoured this book. Even though the challenges of modern technology felt realistic to me, the solutions to the problems facing this couple didn't feel the same level of realism in my opinion. Maybe this stems from my lack of cultural knowledge, but I felt some of those pieces of the puzzle were too easy. Honestly, though, I was enjoying the journey too much to care about the realism in the moment.

Often times I end up complaining about books that have forced extreme conflict just for the characters to have something to overcome. I was thankful that nothing crazy happened to force conflict between these two characters. There were little things that they had to work to overcome but nothing drastic or forced.

Overall, I enjoyed First Comes Like . It was clean for the most part. The only scenes came at a point where I couldn't morally object. Shoot these characters didn't even kiss until past a certain point (no spoilers). The technology challenges were realistic even though the solutions to some of the conflicts were not in my opinion. Ultimately, I'm happy to give First Comes Like 4 Stars. Have you read First Comes Like ? What did you think? Let me know!

Goodreads description--Acting like she's in love with her handsome nightmare of a co-star--in a movie directed and produced by her complicated Hollywood royalty family--is Sloane's job. But what happens when the lines between script and reality get blurred?

Out-of-work actress Sloane Ford is in desperate need of something to do after losing her steady TV gig. When her famous family ropes her into working as a producer on their World War II-era romance, they neglect to mention that the film will be headlined by Joseph Donovan, her least favorite former co-star of all time. The roguish actor made her life a living hell the last time they worked together, using his movie star good looks and Irish charm to cover for his erratic professional behavior. On their new film set, he promises he's different now, but Sloane is far from convinced.

As filming gets underway, it becomes clear that anything that can go wrong will go wrong. When the lead actress is abruptly fired, Sloane agrees to step in and take over the role, and she starts to remember why she fell in love with acting in the first place. On camera, she and Joseph share an electric chemistry. Off camera, they've been honing their characters and, much to Sloane's surprise, growing closer. But playing the role of a woman in love with Joseph Donovan is a dangerous business, and the more time they spend together, the less Sloane can tell what's real between them, and what's just for show.

Goodreads description--Nesta Archeron has always been prickly-proud, swift to anger, and slow to forgive. And ever since being forced into the Cauldron and becoming High Fae against her will, she's struggled to find a place for herself within the strange, deadly world she inhabits. Worse, she can't seem to move past the horrors of the war with Hybern and all she lost in it.

Meanwhile, the treacherous human queens who returned to the Continent during the last war have forged a dangerous new alliance, threatening the fragile peace that has settled over the realms. And the key to halting them might very well rely on Cassian and Nesta facing their haunting pasts.

Goodreads description--#1 New York Times bestselling author of Everything, Everything and The Sun is Also a Star Nicola Yoon is back with her eagerly anticipated third novel. With all the heart and hope of her last two books, this is an utterly unique romance.

Evie Thomas doesn't believe in love anymore. Especially after the strangest thing occurs one otherwise ordinary afternoon: She witnesses a couple kiss and is overcome with a vision of how their romance began . . . and how it will end. After all, even the greatest love stories end with a broken heart, eventually.

As Evie tries to understand why this is happening, she finds herself at La Brea Dance studio, learning to waltz, fox-trot, and tango with a boy named X. X is everything that Evie is not: adventurous, passionate, daring. His philosophy is to say yes to everything--including entering a ballroom dance competition with a girl he's only just met.

Falling for X is definitely not what Evie had in mind. If her visions of heartbreak have taught her anything, it's that no one escapes love unscathed. But as she and X dance around and toward each other, Evie is forced to question all she thought she knew about life and love. In the end, is love worth the risk?

Goodreads description--A Regency romance on the high seas.

1811, HMS Deborah

Georgana Woodall dreams of freedom—freedom from her past and freedom from her secret. She has been living on her father’s ship for years, disguised as a cabin boy named “George.” But hiding her true self is becoming more difficult, and she yearns to break free of her life on the sea.

Lieutenant Dominic Peyton has no time in his life for love, not with his dedication to His Majesty’s Royal Navy claiming his full attention. Determined to prove himself to his new captain, he strives to be an exemplary officer and leader. When he sees the captain’s cabin boy being harassed by the crew, he immediately puts a stop to it and takes the boy under his wing.

Georgana quickly loses her heart to Dominic’s compassion and care, but needing to maintain her disguise as a cabin boy, she is convinced nothing can come of her affection.

Georgana’s Secret is about two hearts yearning to find a safe harbor, and possibly, a lasting love.

I have been on a historical fiction journey for a couple of years now. Where I once used to comment that I rarely read historical fiction, I'm now devouring just about anything I can get my hands on. I almost passed by Georgana's Secret, but I really enjoyed it so I'm glad that I didn't.

Georgana grew up living with her grandmother and mother when her father was off at sea in the Navy. However, her grandmother was quite abusive to both her mother and Georgana. She was adept at hiding it from Georgana's father, but after her mother's death, her father stole her away and hid her on his ship in disguise. She might have escaped her grandmother's clutches, but she isn't safe from harm. The other ship boys harass George due to the captain's special treatment. And plus, there's the fact that the ship is a Navy vessel and the country is at war so battle happens.

Dominic is assigned to Georgana's father's ship as First Lieutenant. And he takes George under his wing and teaches her how to defend herself against the harassment of the other boys. The two develop a friendship. Georgana begins to develop feelings, but maintaining her disguise is too important. At the same time, Dominic's mother reveals the fact that Captain Woodall has a daughter named Georgana, and the coincidence is too much for Dominic not to put the facts together.

That being said, I was a little hesitant about the progression of their relationship. Georgana didn't know Dominic knew she was a girl. So her hopes of more than friendship developing between them was a bit odd to me.

Favorite quotes:

-“To dance is to be a little ridiculous, is it not?”

-"...if I am to keep it from the world, I will not keep it from you. I wish to never hide my thoughts, my feelings from you again.”

I tried to think what I might wish to be different about Georgana's Secret and I couldn't really come up with anything. I feel like because of that the story and characters deserve a 4-Star rating. Have you read Georgana's Secret ? What did you think? Let me know!

A Captain for Caroline Gray - Review

A Captain for Caroline Gray

By: Julie Wright

Publication: March 2nd 2021 by Shadow Mountain

Genre: Adult, Historical Fiction

Source: Publisher via Edelweiss (Thank you!!)

Goodreads description--Regency London

Caroline Gray’s third season in London society ends as badly as her first two—no marriage proposal, no suitor, not even a glimmer of an interested prospect. She suspects it’s because she is far too quick to speak her mind to men who are put off by her forthright opinions, her eager intellect backed by a formal education, and her unconventional ideas about the future. She is far more daring than demure to suit the taste of her class. Besides, Caroline thinks there will always be next season to find a husband.

However, her family’s dwindling income leaves Caroline with only one choice to secure her future: a one-way ticket to sail with the Fishing Fleet to India, where the son of a family friend waits. If the match doesn’t work, Caroline cannot return home.

Captain Thomas Scott loves the thrill of the open sea, and as commander of one of the ships of the “Fishing Fleet,” he ferries scores of young English girls to the shores of India to find husbands. The voyages pay well, but he struggles to understand why families would allow young women to be matched with total strangers so far away.

The trips have always been routine and uneventful—until this trip’s first night’s dinner with one Miss Caroline Gray. She engages in a lively political conversation, presenting opposing viewpoints to the conventionally opinionated gentlemen at her table. Captain Scott is secretly amused and delighted at her boldness, not to mention quite drawn to her beauty.

The rest of the passengers are shocked by her behavior and Caroline finds herself an outcast, suffering harsh judgments from the other passengers. However, she finds an unlikely ally in Captain Scott which quickly draws them closer.

Both know an arranged marriage awaits Caroline at the end of their voyage, yet the attraction between them is undeniable. Caroline will have to decide if she will honor her mother’s wishes and marry a man in India whom she has never met—thus securing a future for her and her mother—or be brave enough to throw convention to the wind and commit to love a sea captain. He may be enchanted by her bold and unconventional ways, but will his love and admiration last?

Normally during *pregnancy I struggle through reading and reviewing books. I've surprised myself this pregnancy with reading just as vivaciously as ever. Until October. October is such a busy month for us. Our two kids have birthdays in October as well as my dad, Husband, and my nephew. Not to mention typical Halloween and fall events. Add to that binge-watching a series on Netflix and a children's consignment sale, and well, I had my worst reading month in years. That being said, A Captain for Caroline Gray is the first book I've read post-October. And even though I read it quickly, I'm starting to feel my normal pregnancy ambivalence towards writing reviews. But I'm going to do my best here.

I enjoyed A Captain for Caroline Gray , and I read it quickly. I could relate to Caroline in some ways. She's not interested in making herself like most of the other women she knows. She's outspoken in her opinions and knowledge. And this rubs people the wrong way. It was projected as a cultural thing from the period. A woman during this time shouldn't pursue knowledge in specific areas. But truth be told, no one likes a know-it-all of any gender during any time. But she fights to be true to herself even when she questions whether she should change or not.

The book description is deceiving. Thomas does love sailing, yet he hopes to secure his finances in a way that will allow him to settle down and get married. Sailing wasn't his plan, it was his father's. Also, the description indicates that Thomas knows all along that Caroline is sailing towards an arranged marriage. Two things are wrong with that. One, the arrangement she has is to go to dinner with a man with the potential to decide to marry him. There's no set agreement beyond that. And Thomas isn't aware of the arrangement until feelings are involved and confessed and acted upon.

There was another aspect of mystery and danger. I didn't mind this part, but the relationships are always what drives me to read.

Favorite quote:

-"There are far better ways to spend a Wednesday evening during the season than with people who work so hard to be fashionable that they will never truly be in fashion.”

A Captain for Caroline Gray gets 4 Stars from me. I enjoyed the relationship journey between these two characters. The secondary storylines and characters were just as interesting. I'll be looking for more by Julie Wright. Have you read A Captain for Caroline Gray ? What did you think? Let me know!

*This review was written in November when I was still pregnant but not posted to my blog until closer to the publication date of the book.
